Thousands line the streets despite heavy rain as 8000 Catholics Total Abstinence Union members march through Boston. The event runs late, but crowds fill sidewalks from building to curb while floats and participants persevere in the wet procession.
A parade drew about 8000 participants and 5000 onlookers despite the smaller turnout than expected. Automobiles displayed varied decorations and lanterns while calcium lights highlighted the marchers. Church officials and clergy observed from the Cathedral steps as crowds filled Union Park.
The schedule lists a solemn pontifical mass for deceased Catholic Total Abstinence Union of America members at 9 a m and convention sessions at 10 30 a m and 2 30 p m. A military drill and ball follow at 8 p m with the Wilkesbarre regiment and other uniformed bodies attending at Mechanics Hall Huntington avenue.
Gallagher declares he shot Mayor Gaynor as a personal protest against officials treatment of subordinates. He says he sought revenge after learning the mayor would vacation in Europe and asserts he was sober and not driven by anarchist motives. He admits to considering assassination as sometimes right.
New York reports Mayor Gaynor remains in critical condition at St. Mary's Hospital Hoboken after a Tuesday morning attack by ex city employee James J Gallagher. The Mayor was chatting with friends on a deck when the assault occurred. details continue on Page 2.
In East Greenwich Rhode Island on August 10 three boys, sons of John H. Straight of Cowesett, were killed while stepping into the path of a New York Bound Portland express traveling 60 miles per hour on a sharp turn. A fourth brother was seriously injured and Irving Wood escaped by jumping from the track just in time. the dead are Robert Straight 15 Irving Straight 11 and John H. Straight 1e. Herbert Straight 9 survived with serious injuries.
Five boys cut across tracks near Cowesett bay when a freight train passing on the inner curve struck them. Irving Wood narrowly escaped, Herbert Straight survived with injuries, but the other two were killed as the engine dragged one body beneath the cowcatcher. The mother learned of the tragedy as medical help arrived.
A major blaze at the Maxwell-Briscoe Automobile Company in Back Bay destroyed the five story garage and showroom at 92-100 Massachusetts Avenue. The fire damaged 250 motor cars valued up to 7500 each, with total damages over 75000 and stock losses around 50000. Fire was under control by 1 PM.
Captain O Lalor of Engine 22 and ladderman Webber of Ladder 12 were injured in a late night Albany street fire. Two explosions of polishing fluid occurred early, a 1000 gallon gasoline tank was found in the sub basement, and about 50 cars housed there were removed by workers including J A Davis and August Newman.
Three convicts at Charlestown State prison are linked to a recent counterfeiting scheme revealed after a Saturday ball game on July 16. A female passer allegedly aided the operation and is believed to be the leader's girlfriend. Prison officials withhold two names to protect informants and prevent riots.
Two men, names withheld, carried out counterfeiting with one possessing deep knowledge of electricity. The other acted as accomplice. Motivated by ball game bets and tobacco, they devised methods to produce false coin. Secret Service Agent Patrick Ahearn likened their ingenuity to the Count of Monte Cristo.
The forecast for New England on Thursday predicts partly cloudy skies in the west and showers in the east. Friday should be fair and slightly warmer in the west with light to moderate variable winds.
