Ultonia Sails After Repairing Obstruction Damage

The Cunard steamship Ultonia sailed from quarantine at noon yesterday after temporary repairs to battle damage. Captain Potter commanded the vessel with Pilot Fairfield guiding her from the berth. Lighthouse tenders Mayflower and Verben a resumed channel sweeping to locate the obstruction but efforts have so far failed.

Begsie M Devine Leaks Off Grand Banks

The American schooner Begsie M Devine capt Devine, from the Grand Banks with 150 000 fish aboard, arrived at Bay Bulls with a leaky hull and suspected open seam. She will go to Halifax dry dock after unloading cargo due to dock restrictions.

Robert Porterfield, Noted Shipping Master, Dies in New York

Robert Porterfield a leading shipping master died at the home of William H. Mott in New York City Bright's disease. Born in Bristol Missouri on September 1 he began as a ship master at 21 and later joined Joseph W. Yates in the firm Yates Porterfield. He retired in 1926 and later engaged in real estate.

Wrecked schooner Anne E Stevens near Alvarado Bar may total loss

The Anne E Stevens ashore on Alvarado Bar with about 200000 feet of lumber aboard is likely a total loss. Owned by Captain Clare and commanded by Captain Vannaman and Walter, Friend & Co, the vessel valued around $7000 and partially insured by the Boston Insurance Company. Pilot Frank Fowler, arriving on the steamer Hibernian, reported 50 miles east of Boston Light and spoke with the Elder Dempster steamer Melrose, directing her to Baltimore to load.

City Debt Increases Mark Record July Balance

The city auditor’s August draft shows higher overall and net debt. July 1 gross debt stood at 85,333,378.98, up 2,677,722.38 for the month, with net debt at 17,737,15, and July marked a new high for the city. From Jan 1, 1806 to July 31, 1899 debt rose by 19,668,601.6, while net debt gained 27,124,384.43 in the period. Debt authorized but unissued on July 31 amounted to 6,822,660, including 1,725,000 inside the limit and 5,107,660 outside. The city’s borrowing cover had shrunk to a low level.

New York Aug 9 The board of classification of the United States general appraisers today ruled against higher values for St Gall embroideries as sought by Wakeman. The decision limits the collector and sets that the full board acted only by secretary orders. About 100000 will be returned to importers and if upheld could mean 1,000,000 a year to importers in federal courts.
