General MacArthur's force of 4000 men advanced five miles beyond San Fernando and defeated a Filipino force of 6000. The enemy retreated leaving many dead and wounded. American losses were twenty killed and wounded. Manila dispatch dated August 9 reports the action.
The Everett Board of Health orders universal vaccination within 48 hours, extending from Ward 1 to the entire city. Free clinics operate at City Hall with physicians, policing quarantines for two weeks, while residents resist and fear fines for noncompliance.
Washington reports the first case of yellow fever among troops at Havana. Burgeon General Sternberg wires that William Beatty of Company A infantry at Punta Barracks Havana is ill with yellow fever and is at Las Animas Hospital.
Dr John Arcinard of Tulane University spoke with Surgeon General Wyman about Sanarelli’s serum. He called Sanarelli an able man but said the serum fails to cure yellow fever and that modern methods with careful nursing save most patients.
David H. Hovey aged two of West Fourth street was thrown to the ground when the wagon wheel broke on Congress street opposite 219. He was taken to the City to recover from hip and shoulder injuries.

Robert Turnbull, an oiler aboard the Prince Edward, leaped from the deck after seeing a man fall seventy five feet into the water. He swam to the unconscious swimmer, supported him with one arm, and towed him back to the vessel where a rope was used to haul him aboard. After about thirty minutes of effort the rescuer and rescued were brought to safety.
