Mrs. James N. Sutton testified in the naval board of inquiry into Lieutenant Suttons death provoking heated legal clashes among counsel. The board met privately after the session and announced letters from Mrs Sutton would be read in closed court to interested parties tomorrow.
Judge-Advocate Leonard sought to admit letters allegedly written by Mrs. Sutton containing serious charges against Marine Corps officers. Mrs. Sutton’s counsel Henry E. Davis objected, saying the letters were personal and irrelevant. The exchange highlighted tensions over evidence and the impact on a grieving mother.
President Taft departed Washington at 5:35 PM in a special Pennsylvania RR car en route to Beverly. The train will reach South Station Boston by 7:00 AM and Taft is expected in Beverly about 8:57. Traveling companions include Frederick Carpenter and Captain A W Butt, with two secret service agents. Beekman Winthrop and Mrs Winthrop ride the same train and were invited to dinner with the President.
