A midday Watertown cloudburst sparked four lightning strikes that struck a church pinnacle and a building, rupturing a water main and burning a business block as passengers on an electric car reported fright. No injuries are noted.
A severe thunderstorm rattled the city last evening as lightning struck the Unitarian Church spire, a trolley car roof, Keith's block, and Watertown square. Fire crews extinguished a church fire, while a burst water main flooded streets. no injuries were reported.
Weather forces postponement of a scheduled Detroit Red Sox game to Sept 29. The shift folds into a day of standings activity as AL doubleheaders produce even results for New York St Louis Philadelphia Chicago Cleveland and Washington, while Worcester climbs to fourth in the New England league. Roston Doves drop two to Chicago Cubs 1-2 and 0-4. Ed Geers sustains a severe toss in Kalamazoo $5000 classic. Jim Jeffries plans a return voyage to England ahead of a Johnson bout. In White Plains New York on August 5 the Thaw sanity hearing heard more about Stanford White with witnesses on Thaws behalf and Thaw himself aiming to prove lack of delirium. Mrs Mary Copley Thaw testified as her son faced adjournment with a verdict expected next week.
Thaw bolted from the courtroom forgetting his status. Court officers chased him to a nearby telephone room where he demanded to see Roger O Mara. O Mara, Thaw family detective, was called and received the paper Thaw carried before he returned to the courtroom.
Beekman Winthrop acting Secretary of the Navy refuses Massachusetts demand to surrender Mess Attendant David W Williams from the battleship Vermont. Massachusetts pushes for manslaughter trial after Williams’ boxing match with Harrison H Foster led to Foster’s death. The Naval Board of Inquest and Rear Admiral Schroeder favor keeping him in Navy jurisdiction.
State authorities pressed for Williams surrender after Navy move. Rear Admiral Schroeder argued to retain Williams aboard. Mr. Winthrop reversed stance, Williams remained on the battleship.
Mrs. Anne McKeon died after drinking tea at the home of Mrs. I. E. Howard in Market Street. She had been visiting since Saturday and collapsed while drinking the tea. The medical examiner found she was choked by the tea, ending police questions.
In Baltimore a gasoline launch wreck on the Patapsco River leaves two women and two men dead. Drowned victims include Mrs. Katherine E. Brown, 60, Marie Hawes, 5, Willard Leach, 12, and Frank Pryor, 19, the launch's engineer. Two bodies are at Canton police station. Sixteen passengers were rescued this afternoon.
Tromsoe reports from Spitzbergen that selected Walter Wellman expedition members arrived. They say Wellman will likely launch the balloon for the pole next week and that the balloon shed rebuild at Spitzbergen was nearly finished when they departed.
A bolt of lightning hit a vacant house owned by ER.RB Bennett at 98 Allison Street Newton corner shortly after a storm. Neighbors saw flying shingles and rang the fire alarm, but there was no fire.
In New York on August 5 1939 Mary Baker Eddy ordered removal of 16 Christian Science practitioners from the First Church building on Central Park West and Ninety-sixth Street including Augusta Stetson and several aides. The action follows reported disagreements over church methods and leadership.
In Hartford on Aug 5 Speaker Banks ordered the removal of New Haven road lobbyists and corporation managers during tense House sessions. The uproar followed the Senate's Barnum bill passage and the House's four hour effort to substitute the Chandler bill modeled after New York law.
In a heated session the Barnum bill faced shifting votes as the press gallery cast 106 to 108 against Chandler. Mayor Forster ordered the chamber cleared after electioneering charges surfaced, and the final tally read 105 to 103 in favor of Barnum Dill adjournment amid uproar as members left for late trains.
The Mason building offices were opened to receive a carload of office furniture sent from Washington for the Presidents arrival. The train is due in Boston at 7 oclock and Taft will arrive between 8 and 9 tomorrow. Large chests of official records and correspondence are included and secured with padlocks screws and dovetail joints.
The southwest corner executive offices include several rooms opening to a public corridor. Three rooms are offered to the President by the Beverly Board of Trade. The largest room, corner and well lit by five windows, will host Secretary Fred W. Carpenter. The secretary’s room adjoins reception and telegraph rooms where wires link to Washington bureaus. Code operators under Chief Smithers join clerical staff in two connected rooms. Secret service agents occupy a room beside the reception area with a supply room nearby.
Aldrich proclaims high prosperity and urges rapid payment of the old bill in Boston. The bill moves through the House, Senate, and conference stages from March to August, with final passage and presidential signature completing the new law.
President Taft says the tariff bill is not perfect but fulfills promises and lowers many rates. Senator Aldrich calls it the most important act of Congress and challenges critics to prove any protected monopoly, affirming public backing for the protection system.
Ex judge A B Parker, a 1904 Democratic presidential hopeful, denounces the Republican tariff plank as deception. He says the tariff act fails to settle the issue and will fuel ongoing political conflict, inviting public contempt for GOP motives.
Speaker Cannon argues the policy protects existing production and both sides without creating new industries. He predicts lasting prosperity for most Americans and asserts alignment with Republican aims and national protection.
Republicans opposed the bill with Beveridge of Indiana Bristow of Kansas Clapp and Cummins of Iowa Dolliver Nelson of Minnesota La Follette of Wisconsin voting against it. Democrats supported the bill with McEnery of Louisiana absent but paired awaiting voting record.
Washington reports the Payne Aldrich tariff bill became law when President Taft signed it at 5 06 pm after a five month debate. The Senate passed the measure 47 to 31 with seven Republicans joining Democrats and Congress adjourned at six ending the extraordinary session.
