In St. Jon Newfoundland Aug 5 an effort to lift the steamer State of Maine from rocks at Point Le Preaux failed as rising tide caused lashed wooden boats to break away. The operation was abandoned for now.
A reunion of the thirtieth Massachusetts regiment at Col Jonas H French Bay View Gloucester featured a special train, a scotch of dignitaries, a clam bake under a large tent, and the re election of Col French as commander. Speakers included Secretary Chandler General Butler and Hon Samuel J Randall. The event showcased veteran memories and lively civic hospitality.
The corner stone of the Bartholdi statue pedestal on Bedloes Island in New York Harbor was laid at 2 50 PM amid cheers and rain. Gen Hancock, Gen Sawyer, Maj Wm Arthur and 300 Masons attended under umbrellas. The ceremony included Masonic rites, prayers, an address by W A Brodie and F R Lawrence, a 21 gun salute, and a tin box deposit with historic documents and coins.
Judge Hayes of the seventh Iowa district rules that justices of the peace lack jurisdiction under the new prohibitory liquor law beyond preliminary trials and binding defendants over to district court. Consequently all local liquor cases are dismissed and the ruling will be appealed to the supreme court.
The Chicago and Northwestern railroad company reports for the year ended May 31, 1884 gross earnings of 25,020,624 dollars, operating expenses and taxes 15,140,957 dollars, net earnings 9,879,667 dollars, interest and rents 6,095,939 dollars, net profits 3,783,723 dollars, sinking fund 83,000 dollars, balance 3,700,728 dollars, dividends 2,939,469 dollars, and surplus for the year 761,259 dollars, total cumulative surplus 9,187,119 dollars.
The Lee family reunion in Hartford Connecticut on August 5 drew about 200 members from various states and provinces. Permanent officers were chosen with William Wallace Lee of Meriden as president and William H. Lee of New York and Andrew F. Lee of Buffalo named vice presidents, among others including Lorenzo P. (last name truncated) named in the report.

The Farragut House at Rye Beach hosted a grand ball tonight by the Farmers' club for naval officers of the North Atlantic squadron. About 300 invitations were issued and accepted, with Carter's band from Boston providing music and the house orchestra on the piazza. Attendees included ex Secretary Robeson and Mrs. Robeson, Admirals Luce and Welles, Commodore Dudley, Captains Carpenter and Wiltze, and several lieuts and cadets representing the navy yard and fleet. A formal supper followed. letters of regret came from Commander Sebley and others aboard Thetis and the Constellation.
In Boston area a fire at Forest Garden restaurant destroyed the main pavilion after an incendiary act. Loss is estimated at 2500 with the fire starting around 11 P.M. Tuesday near the front. Reports from New York and San Francisco note additional fires and greater losses elsewhere the same day.
The motion to remove Theodore Houston and ex Judge Russell as receivers of the New York West Shore and Buffalo railroad company was argued before Judge Daniels. Supporters included Deputy AG Post Frederick R. Condert John L. Hill and J W B Lewis. opponents were McLennen for West Shore Alexander for Receivers Ashbell Green and Steward and Boardman. The issues are improper appointment and insolvency giving the attorney general power to seek removal. Decision was reserved.
