In Westboro a head on collision between two electric cars killed one, left a motorman near death, and injured about twenty. A front seat passenger died soon after, a Boston actress had a leg amputated, and several others were in critical condition.
The New England Anti Imperialistic League endorsed the Philippine plank of the Democratic platform at Faneuil Hall last night. Speakers including Boutwell Cochran Adams Garvin denounced Republicans, praising Democratic aims to aid Filipinos and noting Roosevelt’s policies as ruinous.
Yee Ton Shing, an alleged Hep Sing Tong informer, was stabbed in a Chinatown clash between rival secret societies. Shing, wounded in the hip near 46 Beach Street after dining at Sen Low, was aided by Yee Ton and Yee Ham as patrols and ambulances arrived. Three men described as hatchet men have appeared in town recently, with prior violence tied to Tong tensions. The injured man and his companions planned to testify in court the following morning.

John V Duarte age 27 of Cape Vard Islander shot his wife Louisa 20 at their home in Providence after alleged jealousy and then wounded himself. Both were taken to Rhode Island Hospital where Louisa’s condition was poor and Duarte died tonight from a self inflicted stomach wound. They had a 10 month old girl and had been married about four years.
Robbers attacked an Illinois Central passenger train between Flossmoor and Matteson about 25 miles from Chicago. Five masked men with revolvers robbed several passengers. One resister was seriously wounded, struck on the head with an axe. The train, a special bound for St. Louis with excursionists, was pursued by Patrick O'Keefe, special agent, and a posse of detectives.
Leonard Taylor, 14, son of William Taylor of Amsterdam New York, was struck by lightning while sheltering from a storm under a tree in Thompsonville Conn. and killed instantly. His brother and a nearby friend escaped unharmed.

Eleven year old Thomas Brady of South Boston was killed on Broadway when an inward-bound Dover streetcar struck him as he crossed to fetch ice. Motorman Hassan applied brakes too late, and the body was dragged 10 yards before stopping. The incident occurred in front of 289 Broadway near Newman's wagon while he was riding with ice. He lived at 344 West Fourth Street and attended Bigelow School. The driver and conductor were questioned but released after witnesses stated the boy caused the collision by darting in front of the car.
At Cowes Isle of Wight the opening regatta week drew royal attendance led by King Edward and Queen Alexandra. The first handicap race for yachts over 1 ton featured Meteor III and Ingomar among entrants. Ingomar finished first on the course though Whiteheather won on time allowance.
A Central Vermont train wrecked at Norwich Town, Connecticut, injuring several aboard. Engineer Alger suspects a broken engine part caused the derailment as the engine and baggage car slid down an embankment and a telegraph pole halted the baggage car before it reached the Yantic River. Injured include engineer G L Alger and fireman Arthur Paquette of New London, D D Githin of Rutland, Vite A Gathrop of Norwich, H M Frost of Springfield, and E P Lovett of Ware. Githin and Lovett are hospitalized. others escape serious harm. The two trailing coaches also left the track but remained upright, leaving many women and children unharmed aside from shakes.
A bolt of lightning hit the South Boston gymnasium grounds causing part of the roof to tear away and a 60 foot flagstaff to fall. Two youths Patrick Hagerty and Alex McKenna suffered head and facial contusions and were treated at home then by a doctor. The storm alarm was raised, and many sheltering indoors reported dizziness afterward.
London dispatches say General Kuropatkin’s forces suffer a terrible defeat with remnants fleeing toward Mukden. Three Japanese armies reportedly number 300000 men with many guns, and they are said to have captured numerous guns and large supplies.
A severe head on collision on the Boston and Worcester line at Westboro kills Mrs. Caroline Stewart of Winthrop and injures many others. Motorman Edward P Dees and Motorman William Dunn are among the injured as crews blame order misinterpretation. Nearby communities and a prior White's Corners incident are noted.
A late report from St. Petersburg says General Kuropatkin's main force has moved north for days, with no troops reaching the front from Russia via Harbin in three days. Troops will be detraned at Harbin, rolling stock rushed south for redeployment to Shaoyang and other northern points, leaving a skeleton force to contest the Japanese advance.
Despatches dated July 31 from London field reporters with General Kuroki state Japanese forces have carried positions and now approach Liaoyang. The Standard praises the offensive as justified and notes Russian troops were strong but faltered in tactics, while the Morning Post details three Russian divisions and a Japanese shelling of defenses followed by successful assaults on Taiwan and surrounding heights.
A 15 year old Syrian, Charles A Wolf of 7 Harvard street, fled a crowd from Harvard and Albany to near the Boston post office pursued by locals after stabbing George Patteit of 61 Hudson street. Patteit, with a severed left upper arm muscle from a wound, was taken to the Emergency Hospital. Officers Devine and Duly stopped the mob at Milton court.
