SS CHEFOO reports a three day assault on Port Arthur failed with heavy casualties. A Russian arrival cites 5000 to 6000 Russian killed or wounded, while Chinese losses near 20000. Tokyo dispatches warn Russian losses may reach 7000 and overall toll is appalling.
Worcester officials report a head-on collision on the Boston & Worcester Street Railway near Westboro killed one and injured about twenty. State police say at least two people will face manslaughter charges as negligence is cited. Conductor E J Balcom and Train Despatcher G H McPhee are under scrutiny amid competing accounts of dispatch orders. Balcom says he received a telephone order to proceed to Whites, while McPhee denies this and says Balcom was told to wait for Doe and Metcalf and allow three cars to pass.
South Framingham officials report the 13 hospital patients remain in stable condition after yesterday’s wreck. One death, Mrs. Caroline Stewart of Winthrop Beach, was confirmed. Motorman Edward Doe remains on the dangerous list, while actress Maud Maguire of Boston had a right leg amputated and is expected to recover.
Detroit August 2 three hundred delegates attend the fourth convention of the American Federation of Catholic Societies in Light Guard Armory. Bishop Foley presided as Mass opened at St Marys Church. Father O’Brien preached urging action and defense of church laws against divorce and school secularism. He warned Catholics to speak out for the church and outlined a fighting program for the future. Secretary Matre reported 1,500,000 affiliated members and 75 bishops approved. Pope Pius X sent apostolic blessing via cablegram.
The State Department ordered Minister Bowen in Caracas to protest Venezuela's seizure of the New York and Bermudez Asphalt Company property. Venezuela is believed to restore the property. In Guanaco, representatives of the General Asphalt Company dismantled plant machinery and moved records to Trinidad.
Early last night an unlocked door at 1059 Tremont Street allowed entry to the apartments of Boston Nationals second baseman Fred C. Raymer. About $893 in jewelry, including two watches two diamond rings a diamond scarf pin and other pieces were stolen. Raymer discovered the loss on returning home about 10 o'clock.
Charles Park Guilford a 27 year old clerk at First National Bank was arrested after marked bills surfaced in his possession and he confessed. Police believe he borrowed funds to cover deficits dating back weeks as bank officials suspect thefts of small sums. Guilford's wife staunchly defends his innocence.
Tokyo Aug 2 General Kuroki says he defeated Russian forces defending Liaoyang's east flank in two simultaneous actions at Yushulikzu and Yangse Pass. Russians held strong positions under extreme heat above 119 degrees. Japanese captured Yangse Pass by Monday dawn and Yushulikzu by noon, with some Russian artillery captured. Russian force at Yangse Pass ~ two and a half divisions with four batteries. Japanese casualties under investigation.
The fountain pipe at North Station burst late yesterday flooding the station cellar and postal sub-station basement. Rail road workers discovered the break near 11 pm but repair crews did not arrive until after 2 am, allowing water to reach the mail tube receivers and the main postal station. Much mail was soaked.
In the Italian colony near Hamilton Ferry Brooklyn three Italians were dying from stab wounds and two others were severely cut after a street fight during a saint's day festival. Police search for the assailants.
Ada Gould an 11 year old of 1 Hancock Place Cambridge was held up in daylight and robbed of seven dollars by a well dressed young man after he sought to correct a market mistake. She was knocked down and woke to find her money gone. No clue to the robber.
George W. Williams was found guilty of criminal assault on Miss Laura Kanode near Harper's Ferry. He was sentenced to be hanged September 9 and to be taken to Moundsville with militia escort to avert lynching. An 800-strong mob attempt was foiled. nine ringleaders were fined and bonded to keep the peace amid continuing unrest.

William D. Coolidge of 18 Williams Street was arrested by Detectives Hart Shields and Kelley for the Back Bay storeroom robbery at Dr Malcolm Storer's 5 Brimmer Street residence. Pawnbrokers identified him from furs and dresses he pawned. he allegedly posed as a house cleaner with false keys. Authorities seek the owners of the property and further charges.
Butte Montana August 2 Another complaint was filed in the district court today against the Heinze interests seeking damages of 8 800 000 for alleged extraction from the Johnstown lode. The total damages in suits against F Augustus Heinze his associates and agents now total nearly 26 000 000. Today s suit is the seventh filed by the Amalgamated interests against the Heinze people in the past two weeks.
In West Nebraska Boston man Lewis Aultman was fatally shot by Policeman Pilger while resisting arrest. Aultman had traveled from Bonesteel where he was wanted for lawlessness linked to the Rosebud registration period. The item also includes an ad for Sanford's Ginger claiming 30 years as a purity standard.
St Petersburg reports agree with Japanese sources on developments up to August 1. Russians abandoned Yangze Pass and fell back to Liandiansian, 24 miles southeast of Liaoyang, with heavy losses along the Saimatsze Liaoyang road.
