Allied forces drive a two mile gain on a ten mile front as Foch’s troops smash through German lines. Crown Prince troops in the pocket struggle and face possible encirclement, retreat under heavy fire while U S artillery rips great gaps in enemy positions.
American troops advanced their lines at points along the Rheims Soissons salient amid German resistance. The Germans held some sectors until forced from their positions by Allied fire.
War Department recommends enlarging the army and extending draft age limits to provide new manpower for front forces. The proposals will be laid before Congress next week.
London reports Premier Lloyd George told 200 National Union of Manufacturers members that no one should boast until victory is certain. He warned that planning for trade after the war hinges on maintaining shipping and raw materials while the Teutons hold out, noting penalties will rise with prolonged conflict.
In front of the Hamilton place entrance to the Specialty Shop a gunman fired in a crowded store. Patrons grappled with him as Tony Pappone suffered bruised hands while Patrick Salem and Harry Reppucci aided the struggle.

Oyster Bay New York August 1 The portrait of Emperor William seized last Sunday night by vigilantes at C H Pollutz home who bought it for five dollars was burned tonight at a village square celebration. The Oyster Bay Band and nearly 1000 mourners took part in a parade preceding the cremation.
London reports in the House of Commons that German submarines are being sunk at a far greater rate than before, according to government spokesman in the lower house.
In Pittsfield a petition filed in Probate Court by Charles L. Mellen former president of the New York New Haven Hartford railroad seeks a separation from wife Katherine L. Mellen. He cites long absences from the home and letters alleged to be written by Mrs. Mellen to H Douglas Brown assistant manager Vanderbilt Hotel New York as grounds.
Reuters dispatch from London quotes a correspondent at American headquarters noting German offensive actions on the American front were offensive but repelled. He says the enemy's effort to gain ground may show confidence or a need to delay, leaving many troops behind the Ourcq and implying heavy losses.
Thomas Cox manager of The Specialty Shop at 122 Tremont Street was shot through the mouth. David P. Hall assistant was clubbed with a revolver butt as a disgruntled employee opened fire in the store. A score of women patrons and clerks fled in panic.
In Paris on August 1 Premier Clemenceau secured the Chamber of Deputies vote of confidence 312 to 164. The confidence upheld was on rejecting an amendment that would call up the 1920 class of recruits.
Daniel W. Packard of W. L. Douglas announces that a Brockton strike among shoe cutters has forced the company to place orders for 150,000 pairs to be made by plants in other New England and New York State cities. The move covers about three weeks of factory work and roughly $500,000. The mass meeting delegates refused to appeal to the Federal War Labor Board or to return to work pending wage adjustments and affirmed they will not bargain with any union other than the Boot and Shoe Workers' Union.
