A long distance message from Hamilton Ontario reports the main building of the Hamilton Asylum for the Criminal Insane is on fire. About 1000 patients are housed at the institution.
Origin of the blaze unknown. The fire continues to rage and the entire building may be destroyed. All inmates have been removed without loss of life and are being brought to the city. The male wing is practically destroyed.
Mrs Mary Murphy widow of eleven years and newly arrived from Ireland helped win the release of her fiancé Richard Longfield from Deer Island Correctional and then married him. The act spared the groom time in island custody and prevented the bride from being sent to Ireland.
The Irish widow managed the proceedings with officials at the immigration bureau and was released yesterday. John Gronlund of the White Star line supported her from the start, saving $5 for the company and prompting his best efforts to avoid deportation.
