The Advance's perilous Atlantic voyage and wrecks
The Advance left Fernandina December 10. A storm capsized the vessel and damaged boats, sails, and deck cargo. A later collision caused leaks and pumps to run nonstop. After Bermuda repairs, a second North Atlantic hurricane tore masts and sails, costing boats and windows. One crewman was saved after going overboard. They limped to Barbadoes and Halifax for further repairs. The Advance, a 294 ton schooner, is owned by R. E. Burgess of Wolfville, Nova Scotia, brother of the captain.
