The Common Council voted unanimously to investigate the street lighting contract valued at $1,800,000. A five member committee including Harding, Goodwin, Ballantyne, Moore and McCabe was appointed to hold hearings and probe current lighting conditions.
The council approved an order directing Superintendent of Streets to provide copies of the new Edison contract and the previously rejected contract at the next meeting. The order also asks for all correspondence between the streets department and Edison or copies of it to the Common Council.
Police Commissioner O'Meara announced the appointment of three deputy superintendents. Captain Philemon O D Warren of Division 14 Brighton is assigned to headquarters. Captain Laurence Cain of Division 4 Lagrange street is assigned to command that division. Chief Inspector William B Watts is assigned to the bureau of criminal investigation. Salary is $3000 a year for each.
Chief Inspector Watts becomes deputy superintendent while remaining head of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Captain Warren retains merit and moves after annual listing work, shifting from Brighton to headquarters. Captain Cain stays at Lagrange Street, Captain Warren to take Captain Hall’s desk after listing concludes.
District Attorney John J. Higgins denounces Chester S. Jordan's defense as a frame-up in open court. Higgins says a New York lawyer hired by the Livermores prepared Jordan for his part in the defense during six weeks. Dr. McDonald testified all day, after a three hour cross examination following his prior Wednesday story.
In a jury address Dr McDonald described Jordan recalling taking a flatiron and striking his wife four or five times, as crowds hissed outside Thorndike street. Jordan sat unfazed in the cage amid growing agitation while officers escorted him to his cell. Dr McDonald, the case’s youngest medical expert, testified.
Newton is easy for Red Sox who are tied with New York for second place. Chicago and Cincinnati split a doubleheader 5-4 and 2-1. Major league games were otherwise postponed. Ten thousand attend the funeral of Dr Powers in Philadelphia. Dartmouth defeats Bowdoin 12-0.
A Chicago St. Louis flyer on the Boston and Albany line derailed after a broken rail near Palmer. William Burnett of Buffalo had a broken right leg in two places. F A Casey of Billerica suffered chest burns and fractured ribs. S J Miacal and Mollie Sullivan of Boston were cut or bruised. Several others, including McGee of Boston and Turner, Morse, Corduroy, Ryerson, Bright, and various residents, incurred injuries. The crash occurred about 8 am as eight cars traversed the track one mile west of the station.
A Springfield bound train at about 40 miles per hour derailed as rails spread near a rock ledge. Three sleepers a dining car and a passenger coach were thrown against the ledge preventing a full flip. The day coach was jammed into the ledge as cars behind crashed and windows shattered.
Nicholas Mudge a 99 year old resident of Stony Brook Waltham walked into the kitchen of Mrs James Long at 5h Prospect Street Cambridgeport and told occupants he was glad to get home. Cambridge police were alerted to the confused man who lives with his daughter Mrs John Brotchie.
Queen Wilhelmina gave birth to a daughter this morning in The Hague. A 51 gun salute announced the child as Europe watched with interest. the nation meanwhile hoped for a Crown Prince, but rejoiced at the new royal baby.
Porter MacDougal Smith a Dartmouth graduate from a wealthy Chicago family tried three days to win back the Somerville girl's affection. After she refused him he shot himself and was found with a breakfast Christmas. Authorities say he did all he could to regain the relationship but she persisted in avoiding contact.
Porter Smith, a Dartmouth baseball player in uniform, killed Miss Helen Ayer Marden a Smith College senior on campus. He fired three shots at her then shot himself, dying beside her within hours. The romance dated three years and ended in tragedy.
Emily P. Smith travels to Chicago with her brother’s body after a deadly love triangle involving Miss Marden and Smith. Miss Marden a popular senior at the college and friend of Miss Smith, faced public suspicion while Louise Marden kept silent on the matter. The case centers on a possible engagement and the strained relations that preceded the tragedy.
A freak blizzard blankets Roxbury and the South End while downtown remains untouched. The storm disrupts trains trolleys and telegraph services and a wide region reports snow thunder showers tornadoes sleet and clear periods. Weather bureau reports delayed by telegraph outages west of Buffalo.
The storm lingered over St Louis for most of the day with erratic eastern progress. Snow and thunder showers hit many northern cities including Providence Albany Hartford Worcester and Block Island with New York Scranton Buffalo and Cleveland also affected. Temperatures ran similar across cities except Cleveland at 66. Boston shared the range and Chicago endured a violent morning thunderstorm with lightning striking two buildings and wires disrupted.
Negotiations among Klaw & Erlanger, David Belasco, and Morrison Grey Fiske ended a long theater war. They agreed to present plays in each other’s venues when mutually agreeable, allowing Mrs. Fiske and Belasco stars to perform in cities previously controlled by the syndicate.
New York April 29 Justice McAvoy held Evelyn Nesbit Thaw in contempt for missing court to submit to examination in supplementary proceedings. She was fined 250 dollars to be paid in five days or face imprisonment, and a receiver was appointed for her property. The action stems from a 256 dollar judgment won by Elise L Hartwig, a milliner, in the case.
