Catholic Literary Union minstrel show delights Charlestown crowd

At the Bijou Opera House last evening the Catholic Literary Union of Charlestown staged a minstrel show to a packed audience. Dr. John F. O'Brien served as interlocutor, with end men Peter F. Tague, John J. Mahoney, James P. Maloney, bones Edward L. Quigley, Michael J. Mitchell, and John J. Cronin. Soloists included L. W. Burr, C. E. Cadigan, A. W. Dolan, H. F. Goodwin, P. J. Murphy and Roy O'Brien, under Francis P. Turnbull directing and Rupert S. Carven handling music.

First Regiment Arrives at Fort Warren With Massachusetts Troops

At Fort Warren on April 2 the First Regiment Heavy Artillery from Massachusetts lands aboard the Nan Tasket and Resolute. Colonel Woodruff and Boston officers greet Lt Col Woodman and staff as batteries M and C stand ready. Chatham Steamer Sent to Navy Yard for Repair Conversion

The Chatham of Merchants’ and Miners’ Transportation Co arrived at Battery Wharf from Baltimore and will be transformed into a repair ship at Charlestown Navy Yard. Captain Eldridge commands the 2729 ton steel steamer built in 1885, part of the company’s fleet.

Boston University ministers back Lorimer for Prohibition governor

Tufts Medics Cheer Flag At Patriotic Meeting

Over 125 Tufts College Medical School students gathered in the amphi theatre to pledge support for the nation. Two members had already gone to war, including an apothecary aboard the battleship Iowa and George W. Ryan who left Monday night for orders. President Capen spoke in favor of the righteous war, then accepted a gift flag from the students as a curtain rose to reveal the Stars and Stripes. Police Raise Old Glory on Hanover Street

Five thousand residents filled Hanover street to cheer the Stars and Stripes at the police station. Italian consul Dr Brindisi and Portuguese consul Decosta arrived with Deputy Superintendents Pierce and Burrill. Police Commissioner Curtis led a crowd of business leaders and sixty pupils including Russian and Italian heritage children. Mrs Marion Luce Chenery sang as sixty officers stood at attention and cheered the flag.

Boston Chamber to raise 500 flagstaff on dome

The Boston Chamber of Commerce board voted to spend 500 to erect a heavy flagstaff atop the dome of the building. A large American flag will be raised and flown from the top to celebrate patriotism.

Yachts To Be Renamed Illawarra And Penelope

Eugene Tompkins former steam yacht Illawarra will be renamed Leander under government ownership while the Penelope becomes the Yankton. The two former Boston yachts are expected to perform well after the name changes. The steam yacht Jathniel owned by J B Thomas of Beverly, built at Atlantic Works in 1889 for Publisher Ford, has been inspected and may be accepted as a torpedo or despatch vessel.

Demand of Pilots in War Time for Boston

The pilots of Massachusetts fear for their safety as war with Spain looms. Commissioners ask the governor to suspend the state requirement for five pilot boats on Cape Cod and to allow one steamboat to replace two or three sailing boats during hostilities.

Police Officers Denied Leave For War Duty

The Board of Police Commissioners will not grant any leave of absence to officers for wartime service. Walter H. Brown of the Back Bay station has an application for thirteen months’ leave under review. He may be suspended and his case reconsidered on his return from the war.

Washburn Park Offered for Massachusetts Militia Use

George F. Washburn offers Washburn Park in Westwood near Readville camp as free military ground for the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia. The 100 acre site features dry land, water supply, and a pavilion for commissary use suitable for camp evolutions. The Washburn Park proprietor also runs Washburn Credit House at 465 Washington Street.
