Massachusetts Will Provide Four Infantry Regiments and Three Batteries

Governor Wolcott replies to Secretary Alger on April 2 1898 stating Massachusetts is ready to furnish four infantry regiments and three heavy artillery batteries. He notes the state is unsure of exact troop size the War Department wants and warns against disintegration of existing militia for front line service. He urges new enlistments for volunteers if more troops are needed while protecting state defenses.

Naval patrols move to defend New England coast

Washington April 25. Rumors of danger from the Spanish Palayo and flotilla are dismissed. The Palayo would not have sailed before war existed and would need days to reach the coast. A naval patrol to cover the seaboard is under way with the Columbia Minneapolis and Katahdin sent to New England waters to guard against surprises.

First Regiment Heads to Fort Warren and War Order Passes

The First Regiment M V M of Heavy Artillery is en route for duty at Fort Warren amid cheers as Aldermen approve a 500000 war order for Boston defense. Alderman Dyar reports for duty, and naval reserves sail to New York to man the Prairie with accommodation delays noted. Mobile named as departure point for 81000 troops to Cuba and the U S Asiatic fleet sails from Hong Kong likely for blockade duties.
