General Funston, hero of the Cuban and Philippine campaigns who captured Aguinaldo, is to command troops leaving Galveston this morning on transports. He will await orders at Vera Cruz before marching on Mexico City as more units are rushed to the Mexican border.
A list of crew members and ratings including D. J. Lane, E. H. Frohlichstein, E. C. Fisher, and many others, with ranks such as seaman, boatswain, and ensign. The roster marks wounded personnel among ordinary and chief petty officers during the Vera Cruz operation.
Professor Alfred M. Tozzer of Harvard and his wife Mrs Mary Crow along with Mrs Mary Archer were in Vera Cruz during the U S forces fighting with Mexicans. They are from Cambridge Massachusetts and Tozzer just returned from a Central American expedition and was preparing to sail home.
Rear Admiral Fletcher directs the occupation of Vera Cruz with Rear Admiral Badger leading a strong fleet. The U S naval forces complete the operation today, securing the port under heavy gunfire and prepared to sustain control in the region.

Washington April 23. The order calls National Guardsmen to prepare for active service in Mexico. Fifty thousand men to respond in the first call. Massachusetts named as well equipped to send its quota. The Sixth Fifth and Ninth Regiments likely to be called first. Adjutant-generals in all states ordered by General Mills.
In Washington on April 23 a special service squadron formed this morning includes the cruiser Tacoma from Boston carrying James B. Connolly special correspondent for the Boston Post. The squadron, tailored for inshore work, is expected to face severe combat.
The United States plans a troop movement into Mexico with the Fifth Brigade of the First Division ordered from Galveston to embark for Vera Cruz under Brigadier General Frederick Funston. A National Guard call for 50,000 troops is issued, with Massachusetts regiments likely joining the front.
El Paso reports 1500 armed rebels in Juarez amid rumors Villa leads a 10 000 strong army moving toward Juarez. Border security feels fragile with under 2500 troops on duty and fewer than 2000 in El Paso and nearby. If Villa reaches Juarez tonight Americans would be outnumbered several times.
