A series of violent earth shocks struck Lisbon and Portugal tonight, sending citizens fleeing to streets as buildings swayed and fires broke out. Seismic disturbances were felt across the country, renewing fears of the 1755 catastrophe.
King Manuel and aides urged firemen and calmed townsfolk after a damaging event. The House of Lords, in session, trembled and panicked as walls shook, but the building withstood the tremors with no visible damage. Churches may have interior damage from the incident.
Seismic shocks across the Iberian peninsula caused damage in Madrid with wrecked suburbia buildings and two central fires. After the initial quake people rushed into the streets as women fainted and a temporary panic ensued before subsequent tremors became distant rumbles. Despatches from Cordova report continuing activity.
Jurors in the Chester A. Jordan murder trial viewed gruesome exhibits linked to the death and dismemberment of Honora C. Jordan. Lieutenant Carter testified hair fragments found in a kitchen stove and coal at 509A Medford Street, Somerville, drew a strong reaction from juror Charles B. Hurley who turned pale.
The defendant claims he struck his wife Honora during a quarrel and she fell down stairs. Prosecutors will show by medical experts and exhibits that he beat her with a flat iron and choked her while unconscious. Witnesses include a long list of Boston New York and Providence doctors.
Governor Wilson pardoned former Governor W. S. Taylor and former Secretary of State Charles Finley who were fugitives in Indiana for nine years. Pardons also granted to John Powers Hol land Whittaker John Davis and Leach Steele for charges tied to the January 1900 Goebel murder case.
Indictments against Wharton Golden, Frank Cecil, and William Culton are left pending or dismissed with Cecil likely removed. Henry Youtsey remains the sole convict for Goebel’s murder as clemency is granted in Taylor’s case. The Goebel election dispute ended with Goebel being declared winner by a legislature control panel after Goebel supporters faced a Taylor surge. The shooting occurred January 30 as Goebel was injured amid Capitol clashes. Taylor later adjourned and moved the legislature.
Reading from a 19th century medical advert, the note promotes Father John’s Medicine as a cure by nourishing the body. It claims relief for ailments tied to damp weather and general weakness, urging use for those with colds.
Representative Andy Doyle of New Bedford pushed a measure through the House requiring every saloon to display a picture gallery of tanks and a graveyard with the description and pedigree of each tank. The liquor law committee calls the proposal the most novel act, aside from a prior Oregon bill. The bill passed engrossment on a vote of 48 to 8.
Debate over the Doyle bill centers on requiring saloonkeepers to have identification of the notified patron before stopping liquor sales. Underhill argues it harms families. Doyle contends it prevents blackmail and helps wives enforce requests, noting current laws allow penalties for serving minors or drunkards after family notices.

Cavalry scouted bridges on the Sweet Waters and 50 American tourists were turned back as rumors of an imminent capital entry sparked panic.

It notes deep divisions among Constitutionalists, strong royal favor for the Sultan, and preparations for pay and funding as troops face unpaid wages. Adana reports severe distress with 15,000 homeless and 19 Protestant pastors killed in a Protestant community.
Publisher Peter F. Collier founder of Collier’s Weekly died suddenly of apoplexy at a New York Riding Club. Survived by his son Robert J. Collier and widow. Born in Ireland in 1849 he settled in Cincinnati before moving to New York over 30 years ago to build a publishing house and fortune. He enjoyed outdoor sports and owned fine saddle horses.
The engagement of Miss Nora Iselin, eldest daughter of banker and yachtsman C Oliver Iselin, to Austrian diplomat Count Ferdinand Colloredo Mansfield was announced in New York. The count, stationed in Rome, is the second son of Count Francois Colloredo Mansfield. The wedding is planned in New York in early May.

Theodore Roosevelt reaches Kapiti Plains Kenya on April 23 and prepares for his first African night under canvas. A large Roosevelt expedition camp near the railroad station hosts 260 followers with 13 American tents while lions roam near the grounds. Sir Alfred Pease greets the former U S president at Nairobi station as he awaits residence on the Athi River.
Morris Count prosecutor Charles A. Rathbun investigates the Harvard Club of New Jersey dinner at Morristown School on April 3 honoring Dr. Charles W. Eliot. He says no liquor license was issued and will seek warrants if excise laws were violated.
The American Peace and Arbitration League received Supreme Court approval from Dowling and President Taft along with Theodore Roosevelt and Admiral Dewey as honorary presidents. Alfred L. M. Bullowa prepared the incorporation, aiming for worldwide peace by arbitration enforced by armament. The first meeting is planned in Washington next month.
San Francisco April 23 Brandonburg a newspaper and magazine writer from New York was arrested tonight on a New York warrant for larceny. He is accused of obtaining notes from Grover Cleveland's stenographer and publishing them as a political letter in the New York Times.
