Yellow Fever Outbreak Reported in Havana

Three cases of yellow fever were reported in Havana on April 29. Colonel Davis isolated affected houses and restricted access while medical staff were fumigated and kept separate from the public. Providence doctor reports a third smallpox case in the same house at 60 Wickenden street the House of Blazes, with Julio Gongales a Portuguese man about 38 years old and John De Costa aged around 50 part of the household. De Costa had refused vaccination when Santiago fell ill two months ago.

Obituary notes of Medford residents and Parisian literary figure

John Stetson, Medford's oldest citizen and senior deacon at Mystic Congregational Church for 51½ years, died aged 87. M Edouard Jules Henr Pailleron, dean in Paris, born Sept 11 1834, started as a notary clerk, published Les Parasites in 1860, wrote many plays including The Weary World which earned more for the Comedie Francaise than any other work.

Old Shell Explosion Deadly Echo of Havana Bombardment

Mail advices from Manzanillo report an American shell from last summer’s bombardment of Havana exploded last Sunday in a cafe named the Labyrinth of Gold. Three people were killed and many wounded as workers dug from under the floor where the shell lay buried. The blast occurred during a Gomez memorial demonstration, initially blamed on Gomez’s enemies with a dynamite bomb.

Davidson charged in grand larceny case in New York

George T Davidson, chairman of the House committee of the Democratic Club and nephew of Smith Weed, was arraigned at Centre Street Police Court on grand larceny charges. He allegedly presented a worthless check for 3183.75 to Haven Stone brokerage, dated January 29 and drawn on Fifth Avenue Trust Company.

George R. Edeson, a veteran stage manager and actor with over forty years in theater, died in Philadelphia after a week of illness from heart paralysis. He was best known for his extensive work behind the scenes in managing productions.

Reese Hutchie of Mobile Alabama has patented an electrical device that enables the deaf to hear. In a public test two deaf mutes heard a piano from seventy five feet and tried to repeat the spoken words. The gadget fits the ear like a reversed telephone transmitter and uses microphone principles to magnify sound waves.
