Governor Wolcott did not nominate a police commissioner to replace General A. P. Martin yesterday. Several candidates are discussed with petitions and delegations backing them. Grinnell was rumored but not submitted, and the governor intends to name a candidate before the next council meeting.
Willie Walling, a teen from Montreal whose father is wealthy, left home seeking adventure. He rode a through train to Boston, wandered, fought a shove, got arrested, and is awaiting his father’s arrival to return home. Police note he had 13 Canadian dollars with him, only part found upon arrest.
A five minute furious fight ends with Officer prevailing over Angus McDonald and a woman combatant in a stick duel. The clash drew injuries but the officer gained the upper hand and claimed victory.
In South Boston on Gold street Norman A Eaton of Station 6 battled Angus McDonald 23 over a disputed arrest. McDonald used a belt club to strike Eaton while Eaton fought back, ending with both needing medical care. McDonald faces assault charges as a crowd watched the melee.
A British vessel imprisons the Falke commander at Samoa after he was found supplying arms to Mataafa’s rebels. The Porpoise and Philadelphia block the Falke, with orders to sink her if she moves. Victoria reports the capture followed a Sturdee Kautz conference and restricted access aboard the German ship.
U S officials discount a report that the German cruiser Falke’s commander was arrested at Apia by a British commander on April 4. Secretary Hay and Secretary Long express disbelief, noting Kautz’s cable dated April 4 and sent from Auckland after the steamer’s Victoria voyage. The explanation ties the crew’s rumors to the plantation manager’s arrest and notes the absurdity of one commander arresting another. The British embassy also remains cautious.
Telegrams from Apia dated March 24 report a German man of war returning to port at Admiral Kautz's order to shelter German residents as American and British bombardment began. The ship then took aboard many German residents during the shelling and amid the arrest of a notable German planter aiding rebels.
A man and a woman named Wilson left three children aged 5 3 and 7 months at the Marshall House North End on Monday. The eldest claimed James Foley as his name and that the couple were his parents. The children were moved to the Chardon Street Home yesterday and may become public charges. Authorities search for the parents.
Worcester April 20 report: Extra Freight 4 on the Fitchburg line derailed in five sections about 2 to 12 miles west of Gardner at 1 30. Seven cars toppled, nine piled into a 7 foot embankment. No fatalities recorded as line remained blocked until morning.
Vienna report states the late Baroness Hirsch estate is valued at 125 million dollars. Of this, 100 million will fund charities founded by the baroness and baron. The Hirsch foundation in New York receives 1.2 million and the Institute of Montreal 120 thousand.
A serious fire on Atlantic Avenue prompted rescue of inmates by firemen. Former Chief Egan's son reportedly fell during the daring deed. Damage neared $10,000 as minor midnight blazes were quenched before major damage. Hay and hotel furniture helped fuel the latter fires.
A blaze yesterday afternoon devoured a two story iron-sheathed wood structure at 10 to 16 Atlantic avenue. Estimated loss totals about 9000 dollars with several people endangered including Miss Maggie Murphy of Charlestown and firemen Jack Kildea and Joe Willard of Engine 25. The fire injured and saved multiple occupants and witnesses. totals include Berry and Durkee losses and insurance figures.
Alarm from Box 63 reported a blaze on the third floor of the four story brick Codman House at 67 Marlboro Street. Owned by Charles R. Codman and family, the fire caused little damage.
An alarm from Box 521 at 11 10 last night reported a blazing pile of hay in the yard of the N Y N H and HH railway in Jamaica Plain. Origin unknown and damage from burned hay and a damaged car will total six dollars.
A lounge chair and a chair belonging to the Hotel Touraine were found ablaze in the 212story ell of 7 Lowell Court around 11 PM last night. The blaze caused about 10 dollars in damage. The building is owned by Fifty Associates.
