Practical Politics by Josiah Quincy at the Old South Meeting House
Josiah Quincy closes the Good Citizenship course with a talk on practical politics. He argues politicians must balance immediate effects with long term aims, respect public sentiment, and favor feasible compromises over ideal measures. Canada Considers Export Duty on Inland Waters Fishing
Ottawa reports the Minister of Marine and Fisheries plans a bill in the next Parliament to tax fish caught in Canada’s inland waters by boats or gear not owned by British subjects. It cites the McKinley act that charges Canadian dealers three quarters of a cent per pound on fresh US shipments, while US firms fish freely there. The proposal notes license leasing to US companies fuels a potential Canadian fishing monopoly and suggests penalties for license transfers or collateral failures.
