The French offensive along the eastern bend of the line into Champagne continues. In three days 17,000 unwounded prisoners and 75 cannons captured. in Ville au Bois forest 1300 Germans surrendered and 180 machine guns taken after enveloping movement and heavy counterattacks.
Washington April 18 The House military committee voted 12 to 8 for amendments to the administration bill authorizing calls for volunteers in 500000 increments and providing the draft only if the President finds the volunteer plan cannot raise or maintain the needed force. President Wilson urged Senators and Representatives not to compromise between volunteer and draft systems, stressing safety to the nation.
The Bay State Street Railway Company filed a schedule with the Public Service Commission proposing to raise reduced fare tickets from 7 to 12 cents between certain points. Regular fares remain 11 cents. Some low-demand tickets would be discontinued.
Two men were likely fatally injured when half of an articulated car toppled into a trench where workers stood between outbound tracks near the Forest Hills terminal. About a dozen passengers were aboard the car at the time.
A crash at an outbound Northampton street to Hyde Park line sent an articulated car off rails splitting a switch. Firemen and many from the Elevated station and nearby night lunch rooms freed two unconscious workmen Frank Rossi and James Cairns and rushed them to City Hospital. No passengers were seriously hurt.
Harold Cummings 26 of Elmwood Avenue Winchester was electrocuted when a live wire fell across High Street as firefighters tried to lay hoses to tackle a fire at the Cummings and Chute grain elevator. Captain Edwin E. Stowers of the Woburn Hook and Ladder Company was knocked unconscious by the same wire. The grain elevator burned nearly to the ground with hay and grain losses. coal elevator damage extensive. Estimated loss $50,000. cause undetermined.
German forces retreated in disorder after losing Braye en Laonnois Ostel and surrounding lands to a French regiment that took 360 prisoners from seven regiments. Paris reports 19 French cannons captured. A German counter advance near Juvincourt failed after heavy French artillery losses. Further east near Gauchy the Germans attacked, penetrated, then were repelled in a counter offensive.
New York April 18 The condition of Madame Sarah Bernhardt remains critical though she withstood last night’s operation at Mt. Sinai Hospital. Physicians say her advanced age and prior conditions keep the outlook uncertain despite a seemingly successful procedure.
London reports the American flag will fly from the Victoria tower of Parliament on Friday, the first time a non British flag is displayed there. The surge in American flag sales in London leaves many dealers sold out.
National League games saw Brooklyn 4 New York 1 and Cincinnati 7 Pittsburg 5. Chicago 9 St. Louis 2. American League results included Boston 2 Philadelphia 0 and New York 7 Washington 5. St Louis 2 Cleveland 2. Detroit Chicago rain affected the rest.
Reports of heavy gunfire near Cape Cod were not confirmed by coast guard stations around Provincetown or the Charlestown navy yard. Weather was clear with southerly wind, and officials said no danger or official source substantiates the rumors heard between 10 and 10:30 p m yesterday and early yesterday.
After reports of firing circulated, officials clarified there was no exchange of salutes with foreign vessels. Messages from Provincetown Race Point and Peaked Hill Bar indicated gun salutes, but yard officials confirmed no combat occurred.
