Miss Inga Johnson, a Plant household maid, and fellow maid Marie Anderson alerted officials and formed a bucket brigade as fire gutted the basement of 83 Cotton Street. Chauffeur I C Cole, employed by William F Plant, escaped with aid from the maids.
Miss Johnson searched through smoke to find Cole unconscious beside burning wood in the Plant estate fire on a Newton Centre hill. Firefighters faced two miles of hose lines to reach the scene. a hydrant two miles away delayed suppression. Loss estimated at 2000 dollars. no Plant family members were home.
James B. Jennings known as Kid Carter will be tried for the murder of Mrs Mildred Donovan at the June term of Middlesex Superior Court in Cambridge. Authorities say they have enough evidence for the electric chair without considering his Thursday confession.
Frank A. Menard told the Post that Carter tried to shoot Mrs. Menard at his home the day before Mildred Donovan’s murder. He said Mildred stepped in, covering the gun with her apron as Carter fired, then confessed to killing Mildred Donovan at 7 55 on New Year’s Eve.
