Tis a matter of color Ing General Cogswell leaves for home
Washington April 16 A storm brews among colored people friends alarmed by administration policy toward blacks in civil service and post office appointments. White preference alarms both races and threatens party unity. Critics warn this could cost Harrison southern districts and cripple Republican chances in 1892.

Trustees Defeat Waterman Case in Phillips Academy Suit
In the long running Phillips Academy case, Judge Field sustains the demurrers of the Visitors and of Joshua N. Marshall and Julius H. Seelye. The opinion notes the plaintiff could have intervened, urges awaiting the appeal’s outcome, and retains counsel fees for further consideration. The market terse and financial gossip follow, with dull New York trading and varied commentary on stocks, rainfall, and rate cuts.

TRYING THE PHONOGRAPH AT FREELAND LOOMIS CO
A large crowd gathered at Freeland Loomis Co clothing house to witness a series of phonograph experiments by the New England Phonograph Company. The instrument reproduced notes with remarkable clarity including The Marseillaise The Star Spangled Banner and Yankee Doodle with free hand variations. Exhibitions of the graphophone for private correspondence also impressed attendees and Gov Ames's reception provided a recent example of a piece heard on the machine.
