The Beet Sugar Company incorporated in San Francisco on April 16 with a capital of $5,000,000 and directors Louis Schloss A L Cutts F Ehrmann Claus Spreckels and John D Spreckels. The Spreckels brothers hold half the stock. The plan includes erecting large sugar refineries along the coast in addition to the Watsonville refinery to refine about 50 000 to 60 000 tons annually.

Yesterday the Athletics defeated the Boston team easily in Philadelphia with solid fielding. Mattimore was widely hit in the fifth before Knouff relieved him. the Boston bats went silent afterward. Attendance was about 400 as Welch, Stovey, Lyons, Kelly, and Larkin stood out for Athletics while Gunning and Bennet looked best for Boston.
In Cincinnati the Cincinnati team routed Toledos 8 to 1 while Brooklyn beat Philadelphia 16 to 8. Pittsburg defeated All Americas 10 to 3 and Indianapolis hosted a 6 to 2 win over St. Louis. Newark edged Detroit 13 to 11 and New Haven topped Amherst 6 to 5. Worcester defeated Boston Blues 24 to 0 and Manchester-NH hosts Lowells 12 to 6 in Newark.

An election in Rochester to fill Col Hughes-Hallett’s seat ended with Mr Hugessen, the Gladstonian candidate, winning 1655 votes over Liberal-Unionist Mr Davies who received 1580. In 1885 Hughes-Hallett had 1602 votes against Home Rule candidate F F Belsey’s 13538.
London April 16 Mr Parnell has instigated a libel suit against the London Times seeking 100000 pounds in damages.
In Ottawa on April 16 the House of Commons defeated Mr. Holton's motion to go into committee of supply and to amend the customs act. He argued for clearer regulations and protections for honest importers, with trials on demand and no officer profits from seizures. Bowell defended government policy amid a lengthy speech. Yeas 111 to Nays 71.
Ottawa reports the royal labor commission finds wages higher than before and hours reduced while life costs fall. It highlights abuses against child workers, urges a Labour Day holiday, a centralized labor bureau, arbitration boards for strikes, and a nine hour system. It calls for governing matters affecting workers under a crown minister.
The Nottingham spring handicap race of 850 sovereigns was won by Rejected, with War Lady second and Arundel third. The era of diversions includes a divorce court alimony dispute in favor of Agnes Robertson Boucicault. The industrial parade on May 1 runs from Fifty-seventh Street down Fifth Avenue to Seventeenth Street and back to Broad way via multiple avenues. Harrisburg plans center on centennial events as well with Chairman Kidd returning from New York after arranging a trip for legislators to Washington's inaugural anniversary. The Catskill steamer will carry 500 if the trip proceeds, with departures April 29 and return April 1.
The fifteenth regular semi annual meeting of the New England Meteorological Society was held at Natural History Hall in Worcester with twelve members present. Professor W H Niles of MIT presided and Professor Winslow Upton served as secretary. Papers were read by Professor Upton, Professor William Davis of Harvard, Desmond Fitzgerald of Boston, and E B Weston of Providence.
In Curacao the widow Mrs. Carolina Bruckner and her 11 year old daughter Alma were found in a deserted Harlem building. The mother had given both of them Rough on Rats poison and died, the child in critical condition. Husband Charles Bruckner cites a dispute over the child's custody as a possible motive.
Providence reports an hour long blaze at Arctic Centre in Centreville destroying four large buildings including a hotel. Origin blamed on a suspected incendiary barn fire. Losses listed for Burchard, Gordon, Sinnott and Shepard. No local fire brigade could reach. A steamer and hose cart arrived by special train as flames abated. An additional mill fire in Wales caused $5000 loss. Other fires reported in Virginia Vermont Michigan with varied damages.
Captain Smith of the British steamer La Flandre, arriving from Antwerp at PukapetpaiA, recalled commanding and serving aboard the Danmark before its sale. He described the ship as exceptionally strong, with watertight compartments and iron reinforcement, and offered his view on routes and prolonged voyages following the wreck sighting.
Pumapetrura April 16 The United States Circuit Court granted a non suit in favor of Western Union Telegraph Company in Frank J Primrose’s suit to recover damages from an excessive wool purchase in June 1887. Judge Butler cited telegraph blank back charges and repeated message risk as reasons. Judge McKenna concurred with the verdict.
A telegram from Scotstown reports Morrison known as the Canadian Rob Roy has been cornered at the mouth of an old copper mine. Police and militia have refused to enter the shaft, planning to starve him out while awaiting instructions from the Montreal magistrate. Judge Dugas acknowledged the report but offered no details.
Thayer School of Civil Engineering in Hanover held annual examinations with board overseers Professors Hubbard Andrews Palfrey and General Palfrey presiding. Graduates submitted theses on topics from Common Roads to Piles and Pile Formula and discussions of trusses to pneumatic foundations.
In St Paul the street car strike enters its fourth day with no service attempts. A Lewislature bill repeals a prior act validating an old ordinance granting St Paul City Railroad exclusive street rights. In Minneapolis workers strike, a few shop men are laid off as cars are not run. In Connecticut a boy is killed by the Boston limited northbound near Thompsonville.

Additional false alarms from Box 121 on Dunlow Street and Box 35 41 4 for a wooden house 8 Colton Street and a rekindled kerosene lamp fire at No 12 School Street. Minor damage total about 125 dollars. later a small shed fire rear 49 West First Street South Boston and a Homer Square house fire causing about 1000 dollars in losses.
Dr Samuel W Gross prominent Philadelphia surgeon and author died aged 62. He followed his father as chair of surgery at Jefferson College and wrote a medical treatise on tumors of the mammary gland. Lydia R Ward a leading charitable worker from western Connecticut died at Bridgeport aged nearly 84 after a stroke. She founded a young women’s seminary in Salem and led the Bridgeport Orphan Asylum for decades.
The third annual course for young people opens April 27 at Central Music Hall. Henry H. Belfield leads the project, expanding from Boston to Chicago after earlier Old South efforts. Edwin D. Mead opens with Washington's relations to the West. other speakers cover La Salle, George Rogers Clark, Samuel Adams, and the Northwest division. Courses spread to Bloomington, Milwaukee, Madison, and Indianapolis.
New York, April 16 Mayor Grants secretary received Judge Wallace order dissolving the injunction against the Mayor and board of electrical control. Poles were downed on Fourteenth Street to Union Square and Sixth Avenue. Metropolitan Telephone and Western Union wires were removed amid bouts of darkness and danger as Brush Electric Light Company allegedly ignored a shutoff notice.
Local sugar refinery men deny knowledge of any collapse of the sugar trust amid reports from New York. Trustees and refiners note seasonal sugar shortages and rising prices abroad, with ongoing grinding and capital concentration cited as factors. No Boston refiners admit being caught in a corner.
The Boston Presbytery began its spring session at Fourth Presbyterian Church South Boston with a business meeting naming Rev MecDougle of Taunton moderator for the year. The Barre church was added to the roll and Rev Cummings called. Retiring moderator Rev S Dewing of Somerville preached on Sabbath desecration. The day featured sermons and talks on Sunday observance and missionary work with several visiting ministers planned.
