Matthews Arnold the Poet and Critic of England

Matthew Arnold emerges as a major yet controversial figure, a Wordsworthian poet influenced by Greek and Celtic threads, whose brief poetic career gave way to a profound critical vocation. The piece traces his early volumes, reception, Oxford professorship, key works in translation and criticism, and his enduring impact as a social and cultural commentator. It notes honors from Edinburgh and Oxford, royal recognition, an American lecture tour, and his enduring dialogue on religion, culture, and civilization.
