Kansas City April 17 All the Burlington switchmen in the yards quit work at 7 pm crippling freight handling. The strike stems from the company’s refusal to reinstate a switchman discharged for assaulting the night yard master.
New York reports the immigration commissioners found no sufficient evidence to block sixteen Italian marble cutters from landing under contract labor rules. They will work for Bowker Torry Co in Boston, replacing striking workers from Carrara. Bowker defers, promising a full public statement later.
The signal service chart for Tuesday notes the lowest barometer at Sydney, C. B. across New England readings were normal. A low in the Northwest was absorbed by a Lake region high and a new high moving in. A poorly defined low forms in Texas and is expected to stay south. Overall, a fair day ahead.

Mrs Ellen Bergen of 77 Brighton Street was fatally burned at 11 PM when a large kerosene lamp she carried exploded. She was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital where doctors said she could live only a short time. The Bergen home is a three story brick building. a passerby alerted Box 6 but the fire was extinguished before the department arrived. In the same time frame a separate fire on West Broadway caused $100 damage to Dr C J McGowan’s rear three story wooden building. In Missouri, D A Hoffman’s residence burned, three Hoffman children died, the father and three others were injured, and authorities suspect arson by Hoffman. In Kingston, James Norton’s house burned from a stove, $1200 loss with no insurance. Ottawa’s Canadian Granite Works canal basin burned. loss $25,000 with $12,000 insured.
In Wilmington and Lisanon on April 17 the Republican conventions nominated Jacob J. Pugsley of the Twelfth District and Hon. Henry L. Morey of Hamilton for Congress. The gatherings adopted resolutions urging delegates to vote for the Hon. John Sherman at Chicago.
