Views on Tunneling Boston Common Split Remonstrants
The Legislative Committee on Street Railways heard remonstrants led by Mr. Dabney opposing a West End Railway tunnel under the Common. They warned about destroying trees and public space, warned against burdens on abutting property, and urged preservation of the Common, preferring Mall use alternatives or rejection of the plan. General Butler and Beacon Hill residents voiced concerns, urging caution and speech to protect open space against rail intrusion.
