This morning’s news reports the Cocheco print works in Dover New Hampshire were destroyed by fire with losses estimated at 200000 dollars. Other items include Methodist Conference continuation in Leominster and various political and military notes from federal and local levels.
London April 15 Sir William Vernon Harcourt resumes debate on the coercion bill denouncing Tory and Liberal Unionist taunts about American gold and alleging collaboration with Mr Parnell. Major Saunderson accuses the National League of criminals while Mr Healy calls him a liar and faces suspension. The clash ends with Sexton warning of a future motion to revoke Healy’s suspension as the Speaker praises restraint.
A genuine cyclone struck near Martins Ferry W V a river city, damaging St Clairsville to ten miles west and causing heavy losses exceeding 1 million dollars. Buildings were demolished trees snapped and river wreckage filled the water as residents sought shelter in cellars. Injuries included several residents and a missing man. the storm crossed Patton Cochran and Coleman properties and toppled mills, banks and hotels. Public panic and downed Western Union wires accompanied the disaster as crews assessed further damage.
Dover New Hampshire April 15 A massive blaze at the Cocheco Print Works caused an estimated 200000 loss and left about 600 operatives jobless for four to six months. The fire began in the hot room near printing machine No 11 and spread rapidly to engulf the main building. Several workers escaped by leaping from windows while one elderly man Elijah Hayes aged 66 survived a non fatal fall after refusing to jump. Firefighters battled the flames with three steamers and all available hoses as explosions echoed from stored drugs in the basement. The 250 by 75 foot four and a half story building housed fourteen printing machines. Insurance covers the loss though rebuilding may begin soon. Many skilled workers may seek work abroad in England and Scotland. The Cocheco Mills will continue operation, supplying most of the cloth used in the print works.

Carrigan defended public schooling and compulsory, free education, citing 1880 census illiteracy of 93,065 and modern estimates around 121,572, plus 20 to 30 percent illiteracy among 14 to 16 year olds in mills.
John F. Dougherty of 57 Monument street Charlestown was arrested for drunkenness yesterday forenoon and found dead in his cell at Station 15 at 4 30 in the afternoon. An officer says he hanged himself.
Mr Chamberlain addressed 2000 Unionists in Edinburgh and warned there is no assurance the home rule bill would be revised if Gladstone returns. He said Gladstone refused four times to say the word that ends Liberal debate and would not accept major policy changes. The Unionists must fight the quarrel, aiming to preserve the union even at the risk of wrecking the Liberal party.
Parapetonia April 15 Judge Butler dismissed a cruelty complaint against William Nichols master of the Belle of Bath after testimony showed sailors refused orders and the captain disciplined them. The sailors testified of being tied in irons for about an hour and a half while the captain was accused of drunkenness. defense argued it was necessary punishment for discipline.
In Ellsworth Maine citizens demanded inspection of internal revenue records under section 8240 and a collector relented producing the records. In Porriam Missouri Judge Webb denied habeas relief for Deputy Collector Murphy, with District Attorney Bird appealing to the Supreme Court. Valuineron Maine discusses state versus federal authority over production of records for enforcing liquor laws and calls for a judicial decision for guidance.
A commission of the Boston Presbytery organized a promising Scotch Presbyterian church in the vestry of the Swedish Church on Emerald Street Boston with 41 members by letter and 22 by profession. Reports in Key West claimed Commander Greene of the Yantic barred English warships from threatening seizure of Tortugas in Haiti dispute. Both State and Navy Departments deny any such action by Yantic’s commander.
In Superior Court on Thursday the three men charged with assault and robbery of F G Abbott on March 10 were tried. Verdicts split as to McAteer and Breen with nine to three for conviction, while Flannery was acquitted. Abbott, beaten on Berkeley street, was left bloodied but alive after a brief robbery. Abbott later identified McAteer from a police description, and a pawnbroker scene linked McAteer to the missing silver watch.
The Kirnness at Mechanics' Building drew praise from the first lady with a blessing read after a delayed despatch.
