In Lowell on April 14 a public stir arose as fifty four members petitioned to establish a new church amid long running conflict with the pastor. Seventy members have held services elsewhere for two months over perceived pastor authority and letters taunting the pastor.
In Aveusta Maine April 14 Deputy Collector Thomas F Murphy refused to answer questions about paying a special United States liquor tax. Judge Whitehouse ordered contempt but suspended to allow a habeas corpus petition. Collector Redman telegraphed the judge claiming Murphy acted on directive, while the State vs Hall was continued.

Five sailors from the Belle of Bath of Searsport Maine testified before U S Commissioner Bell that Captain W G Nichols tied them by the wrists and hung them in irons for over an hour on March 26 during heavy weather after the port watch refused to report on deck. The vessel had sailed from Queenstown March 3 for this port. Nichols posted $1000 bail.
New York reports District Attorney Martine holds a written confession by Billy Maloney reading clerk to 1884 aldermen. Maloney seeks immunity, may testify with corroborating oral evidence. It cites Montreal meeting with ex-Alderman Keenan and possible witness turn by Moloney against James Richmond of Broadway surface roads.
Washington April 14. Following John T. Raymond's death at Evansville last Sunday neighbors recount his noted fondness for matching coins. A close friend recalls Raymond pausing a Saratoga visit to place a dollar on a buggy driver’s tire, with the driver matching it and Raymond quickly scooping the coins. In Salt Lake City a similar long contest with Race ended after hours, Raymond losing 175 dollars.
April report from Prrrspure notes detectives claim new evidence to convict more suspects in the Pan Handle railroad robbery. Joseph Stephenson and John Smith were captured in Beaver Falls after fleeing a Lake Erie freight train. two others escaped. Prisoners are from Youngstown Ohio. prosecutors plan to subpoena up to 600 witnesses from across the country, with the railroad company pursuing charges only against those with multiple counts and using in-jail witnesses.
Fort Grnson April 14 Dr. Brine examined Mr. Blaine and found lung inflammation diminished and healing underway. No danger of relapse unless prompted by great imprudence.
The legislative committee on street railways continued hearings on the West End Street Railway Company petition to consolidate with rivals and build tunnels to use cables and electric motors. Henry D. Hyde outlined Boston’s street railway history, blockades, and the need for unified control and rapid car movement to ease congestion from Brookline to downtown. He urged a general tunneling authorization with safeguards involving two public boards and preservation of the Common, detailing consolidation terms and preferred stock provisions.
