Attempts to Influence Bishop Delay Methodist Changes
Annoyances surround Bishop John W. Hamilton as the New England conference cabinet adjourned overnight without completing ministerial appointments. A telegram demanding a specific preacher sparked calls of shame while changes included Rev. John Chaffee to Lynn and other moves. The Rev. J. Chadbourne announced his withdrawal amid a divorce suit, with parishioners backing him. The pope’s illness was noted as the Roman Church’s ebb, and John W. Suter urged ending public funding for sectarian church uses.

The Karema of the Eastern Balkan Steamship Company arrived in East Boston after a three month voyage from Calcutta with two fires aboard the vessel. The first fire appeared in Colombo harbor on January 17 and was extinguished. Captain J H Beare initially aimed for New York but diverted to safety as flames were brought under, 300 miles from New York.
