Teachers Demand Higher Pay at Boston Hall
Faneuil Hall drew school teachers led by the Boston Elementary Teachers' Club to press for salary raises. Mayor Fitzgerald called $552 yearly pay for elementary teachers a disgrace but cited rising school costs and said a veto override by the school committee was possible. He noted school expenditures had doubled in seven years to about $6.3 million. Joseph Lee opposed the raise, arguing it would harm pupil training and health.
