A powerful cyclone and associated windstorms struck multiple communities including Clarksville and Osceola plantations in Louisiana. Destruction halted houses, barns, and gins, with fatalities and numerous injuries among both whites and Negroes. Memphis reports higher deaths, fires in debris, and extensive property loss estimated around $100,000 along with hundreds homeless.
The president sent nominations to the Senate including Alexander W. Terrell of Texas for minister plenipotentiary to Turkey and James J. Read for U S attorney in Arkansas western district. Terrell is a Texas native with a Virginia background and noted wealth and influence in Austin.
Connecticut State Prison directors vote to suspend Warden Chamberlain from April 15 1893 through the investigation period and appoint George D Havens brigadier general of the Connecticut National Guard to act as warden. General Slavens serves as New London police chief.
In New York on April 13 the Buchanan trial resumed with cross examination of Dr. George L. Peabody by Dr. O Sullivan. The witness could not confirm a morphine and atropine death claim, stating he had not sworn such a conclusion and had no personal knowledge of Mrs. Buchanan. Dr. William Hs. Thompson testified that symptoms before death matched morphine poisoning but were complicated by another poison.
German master Carl Walbrodt failed to appear after leaving for New York, ending his Boston visit. The Boston Chess Club dispatched Joan Barry to face a panel of newspaper experts, including Green Curran Matthews Keeler Hughes and Marble, in a four hour simultaneous display. Barry prevailed, defeating all six opponents.
Norman Wilkie disappeared January 6 after skating with a friend who left early. His decomposed body was found by boys fishing at Jamaica Pond near pine bank, brought to the Murray undertaker. Police and the medical examiner were notified. no autopsy yet. Wilkie, a Y M C A athlete and swimmer, had a roving disposition with a Canada origin and a past in Winnipeg and Riel's rebellion. Some friends suspected foul play and a former suitor had threatened him. His family resided in Carleton Place Ontario and Detroit.
Governor Russell’s nominee Jere Rt. Kane to be Spencer trial justice was rejected by Executive Council eight to one. James Donovan of Boston was the lone vote in favor. Critics cited Kane’s conduct with clients and contradictions in testimony amid charges from Spencer leaders.
More than three hundred members gathered at the American House to commemorate Thomas Jefferson with a five hour supper. A. George Bullock opened the program. Governor Russell sent a letter of absence. Joseph H. O'Neil spoke on pension reform and Democratic aims to reduce taxes and overhaul the pension system amid party unity and calls for broader reform.
A large company of military men and friends gathered at Grand Army Hall six Washington street for an 800 strong entertainment hosted by Major Thomas J. Fulier of the Boston Light Infantry Veteran Corps known as the Tigers. The evening featured a musical program with John Braham Theodore Bendix James P. Williams George E. Hayes Emile Schwab and others, plus E. W. Eaton demonstrates of prestidigitatoire. A collation followed. committees included L F Papann C E B Edgeley C H Gee J H Quinn G di Hayes Horace L. Bailey and C H Stackpole.

The gas investigation committee heard George Fred Williams accuse Gas Commissioner Barker of tearing out a cost page from a report. Clerk Leary testified Barker tore the leaf, while Barker denied the claim. The session also covered Mayor Matthews's dollar gas petition and included heated exchanges over private papers. An assessor, Richard Hutchinson, was examined.
