A large crowd packed the South End grounds for a baseball show featuring Tenney's Boys. Official turnout stood at 6246 with many more present including holders of invitations and season tickets, despite chilly weather. The crowd, the first since the American League came to Boston, recreated old park atmosphere and energy.
After 47 hours of deliberation the twelve jurors failed to agree on guilt or insanity in the murder trial of Harry K Thaw for killing Stanford White. Justice Fitzgerald discharged the jury and Thaw was sent to the Tombs without bail to await a second trial. Attorneys planned next steps including possible bail appeal while Jerome cautioned against venue change.
After William T. Stead urged a 100000 antiwar pilgrimage fund at Carnegie Institute ceremonies in Pittsburgh, a rush of donations followed. He proposed 50 cents from every college student in the United States to reach the goal, with support from Knox College Allegheny Geneva Tuskegee and others. The event included a Carnegie banquet and gifts from Emperor William.
A city health committee heard a protest against renewing Dr. Elizabeth Riley's license to operate a lying-in hospital at 310 Bay State road. Everett W. Burdett spoke for the remonstrants, with James M. Prendergast and Albert E. Pillsbury among others voicing opposition.
George Huff of Chicago University signs a three year contract to manage the Boston Americans. The agreement names Huff as the club’s field leader and adds he will oversee team games and training through the 1909 season.
A mob of about 2000 attacked strike breakers near Dorchester Street and West Second Street injuring Miss Gussie Reinhart. Captain Wescott and 160 officers contained the crowd while arrests were made for profanity and drunkenness.
The text lists goals for the commission: secure more steam railroad capacity across the state, develop tidewater lands for manufacturing, foster smaller industries by water power or other means, and encourage immigration of Massachusetts capital rather than emigration.
Governor Guild sent a message to the Legislature requesting the appointment of a commission to study ways to further stimulate Massachusetts industries and manufactures. He called the move precautionary, noting current prosperity yet urging safeguards and expansion to prevent declines and attract new enterprises.
