The Roosevelt honeymoon voyage from Spezia to Genoa was cut short in Genoa as crowds swarmed, prompting a revised itinerary to avoid growing demonstrations. Theodore Roosevelt and his wife were traveling in a sentimental pilgrimage, delaying milestones by a day.

Washington April 8 Two new battleships of the most modern type were authorized by the House of Representatives. The ships would cost about 11,000,000 each and were approved after a sharp fight led by Representative James A Tawney of Minnesota who sought to limit the authorization to one. The proposal to limit was defeated on a 109 to 160 vote.
The House action on the Presidents battleship program signals near-certain success. Two battleships, two 14 knot fleet colliers, and four submarine torpedo boats are funded, with total appropriations near 128 million dollars versus Meyer’s navy estimate around 181 million.

Thomas F. Walsh known as the Silver Mining King died at his Massachusetts avenue residence after a lung growth linked to an old mining injury. Surrounded by his wife, daughter, and son-in-law Edoward McUean, doctors from Johns Hopkins and local physicians, he will be buried at Rock Creek Cemetery beside his son killed in a prior automobile accident. Born in Ireland in 181, he came to Colorado at 19 and made his fortune in mining. Married Carrie B. Reed in 1879, he served as a Paris Exposition commissioner in 1900 and was publicly honored by the U.S. government. Funeral to be simple and conducted by the Masonic order on Sunday.
