Rome reports that newspapers blamed Roosevelt for not sharing all Vatican letters. The Vatican’s reply was mild to allow talks, but Roosevelt, unaware of this, released the correspondence to the press, damming a potential audience. The University of Rome will award him Doctor of Letters, Honoris Causa, at a Saturday meeting.
Leishman reported that Mr Roosevelt in Egypt did not receive the full text of a despatch. He advised Roosevelt that the Vatican would not grant an audience unless certain conditions were accepted.
At Ambassador Leishman's reception in Rome on April 7 President Roosevelt told the rector of the American Protestant Church that upon returning to America he would do his utmost to have the Methodists in Rome removed. He called them a disgrace to any religion and said Spencer and Clark should repudiate Mr. Wippel's statement. They are mistaken if they think they will profit in America. They won't get a cent.
Theodore Roosevelt Jr and Miss Elanor Alexander announce a June 20 wedding in the afternoon in New York. Colonel Roosevelt will sail for the United States on the 10th.

Babson named corporation counsel for one year at 89000. Charles H. Slattery to be city treasurer for one year at 87050. James F. H. Smythe appointed superintendent of printing at 85500. Alexander W. Longfellow named to the Board of Art Commissioners with no salary. Dr. James J. Viinot to be a Consumptives Hospital trustee with no salary. Mrs. Margaret J. Gookin named to the Board of Overseers of the Poor with no salary.
Mayor Fitzgerald sent a second batch of Civil Service appointments filling eight city positions. New appointees include James Jr. Smythe as Superintendent of Printing, Felix W. McGettrick to the Assessors board, and Patrick J. Brady to the Overseers of the Poor, replacing recent vacancies.
Patrick J. Brady stands out in local politics as Ward 23 Democratic committee chairman and longtime ally of former Democratic city leader James Donovan until Donovan shifted support to James J. Storrow in the recent city campaign.
In Mills Maine on April 7 a large bull moose fought the Penobscot as it attempted to swim the river but was swept over a dam by the swift current. The spot near the famed cyclone barn built by lumberman John Goddard hosted the river’s most thrilling battle to date.
