A fire in the cold air box above the prnace of St John the Evange st at Bowdoin street started at 4 30 yesterday after noon. Alarm from Box 23. Fire spread through the room, burned the ceiling, broke through the floor to the vestibule, and shattered glass in several windows. Estimated damage 800 to 1000 dollars. A second fire in the cellar of a four story wooden building behind 9 Salutation street caused by an 8 30 last evening alarm from Box 9. Occupant listed as Bernard Banando. Damage slight.

Professor William Gammell Dies at 77 in Prov idence
Professor William Gammell LL.D. of Providence died yesterday after weeks of illness. Age 77. Born Medfield Massachusetts he grew up in Newport Rhode Island and graduated from Brown in 1831. He was professor of rhetoric English literature then history and political economy from 1836 to 1864. He edited periodicals and the Christian Review, received an LL.D. from the University of Rochester, served on Brown’s board of fellows and led the Rhode Island Historical Society at his death.

Amelia Jackson Sargent widow of Turner Sargent and daughter of Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes died at 296 Beacon Street aged 45. She leaves no children and resided with her father after his death, having accompanied him on a late trip to England. Hobart Wood Richardson editor and proprietor of the Portland Daily Advertiser died in Portland of Brights disease. He contributed to Atlantic Monthly and other periodicals and led the Portland Daily Star acquisition in 1868. Elizur Smith, prominent Lee paper manufacturer, died aged 69 after a career spanning clerk work, fortune, debt settlement, legislature service in 1849 and in 1880 and 1831 Massachusetts Senate. A widow survives him.
