London April 4 Sir Charles Russell continued his speech for the Parnellites at the Parnell commission He described the league formed by Davitt with Parnell as president noting that five of its executive had ties to secret societies Its appeals aim to aid farmers in distress and are constitutional He said Parnell and his followers had been vilified and that prominent league members support boycotting within justified limits He asserted Parnell faces no criminal liability unless involved in murder or outrage as part of the league aims
An imperial order mourns the German navy losses at Apia after the recent hurricane. The Emperor notes officers and men died while faithfully serving the empire and expresses hope their sacrifice will be a bright example sustaining devotion to duty and national welfare.
London April 4 The House of Lords voted 95 to 77 to elect the Earl of Morley Liberal as chairman of committees, rejecting Lord Balfour of Burleigh. Gladstone Jr., son of the former premier, relapsed from illness. Dourrai April 4 A bailiff was shot dead at Coleraine County Londonderry today.
The Cleveland party arrived in Jacksonville at 3 AM aboard the Plant steamer from Enterprise. A procession escorted the visitors to a St James Hotel breakfast, where a flowers basket bore the initials EF KF. The group, including Mrs. H. B. Plant and Mrs. Alfred Bishop Mason, toured the subtropical exhibition and city streets, admiring the sanitary improvements funded by contributions from President Cleveland, the press, and the public.
Governor Stetson calls for a constitutional convention at Boise on July 4 with Delegate Dubois promising Idaho statehood next winter. Congressman elect C. R. Breckinridge visited Little Rock to aid the Clayton murder case. He supplied funds after learning the Governor lacked resources, promised more, and expressed resolve to see the killers arrested and punished.
Captain James B. Ellis, 28, from Canada, married Miss Alexandrina Leed of Thurso Scotland in a Salvation Army ceremony at the Young Men’s Training School on Seventh Avenue. Marshal Ballington Booth led the service with Salvation Army brass band music, a street parade, and a crimson jacketed groom.
A Sun report from Washington says Joel B. Erhardt will be collector of the port and Cornelius Van Cott postmaster at New York today. Also named are General John N. Knapp for naval officer and Theodore Willis for surveyor, with others present at the conference. The district attorneyship remains unsettled between Granville P. Hawes and George W. Lyon. General Henry A. Barnum is expected to be United States marshal for the southern district of New York.
In Rochester New York on April 4 only 23 of 125 streetcars ran on four lines. Strikers remained orderly though a hoodlum group caused trouble on the Lake Avenue line. At seven o'clock all cars were ordered into the barns.
Destructive Dakota prairie fires wipe out Leola and Mt Vernon like towns. Wind fanned flames destroying farms and barns, tens of buildings burned, hundreds left homeless, losses estimated in the millions. Minnesota reports widespread damage with several villages nearly wiped out and travel disrupted.
Gol. George Burton Dyer formerly of Bancroft and Dyer announces his association with the house after the dissolution of the firm. He informs friends and patrons of the new partnership alignment and ongoing services.
A blistering prairie fire raged west and north of Lake Benton and across Huron area with winds 50 to 60 mph. Ree Heights and Dempster were nearly destroyed and several ranches burned. In Huron many buildings and barns lost, with Miss Sweeney burned to death near Highmore and Mr Babcock killed near St Lawrence. Estimated Dakota losses run into the millions.
Rhode Island returns indicate Slocum the Democrat wins the attorney general seat amid statewide gains for Democrats. Senate 21R 11D 4 vacancies. House 23R 37D 12 vacancies. Registration of foreign-born citizens rises by about 9000. Democrats report money tied bribery and corruption in wards, detectives deployed, and a $500 reward offered.
Rev Edward K Beecher who was crushed by a train last night at Brooxlen N Y remains at Seney Hospital. The left leg was amputated this morning. Dr Beecher is in good spirits and, due to his strong constitution, may recover.
Pittsburg Penn April 4 Edward Dietz and wife quarreled. Mrs Dietz swore out a warrant. Officers found Dietz had cut the throat of his three year old daughter from ear to ear and then his own throat. Both dead within a week. Nine attempts at self destruction have been made, six successful.
