Washington reports the American draft system may double the number of men called for abroad in 1918. Every community could be asked to provide twice the original quota. Brigading of American battalions with French and British units will drain training camps of nearly all but the latest arrivals.
The Senate passes a proposed national prohibition amendment by a 27 to 12 vote. The Bay State 11th district will go on record in favor, with 25 more to go.
British and French forces wearied by a day of fighting as German troops dig in along the front. French commander Foch prepares a major coordinated strike while the Allied lines await the expected counteroffensive and a decisive push to end the current engagement.
Despatches from the front say German attempts to break the Allied line in Picardy have stalled. French and British forces gain ground in places as they prepare for a potential counteroffensive. The timing and direction of Germanys planned great drive remain uncertain as Allied leaders adjust defenses and await decisive action.
The Massachusetts Legislature approved the proposed constitutional amendment prohibiting manufacture importation and sale of alcoholic liquors for beverage purposes. The Senate’s ratification passed 27 to 12 after rejecting the referendum proposal.
The House approved ratification by 191 to 45 and Bay State becomes the 11th to ratify. After 36 states vote, the nation will be bone dry. Senate passed 27 to 12, a larger victory than expected for prohibition forces.
Church bells rang as anti liquor adherents celebrated amendment success in numerous cities and towns last evening and country churches gathered to mark the victory.
London April 2 The Daily Express reports via Percival Phillips that German forces launch fresh divisions in futile efforts to breach the British line. Despite gains, their thrusts fail to hold and progress remains limited.
Paris reports the eighth long range bombardment began at 10:10 this morning with a projectile exploding in the city region. The attack wounded two women and caused no further immediately reported injuries.
Governor McCall urged the legislature to appropriate funds to equip camps for supervisors and directors. The volunteers, boys of the Commonwealth, will work on farms this summer. The message was referred to the joint committee on ways and means.

Milwaukee April 2 early returns suggested Irvine L. Lenroot, Republican, would win but later bulletins from the west and northwest were disappointing to Republicans. At midnight leaders admitted the vote would be close.
Supporters of Joseph E. Davies the Democratic candidate are sanguine of victory while Victor L. Berger the Socialist anti war candidate polls a large vote but has no chance. Early returns from 27 counties show Lenroot ahead in many areas, with Davies needing a large Milwaukee gain to win. As more bulletins arrive the outlook shifts and parties pledge loyalty to Wilson's war administration.
A labeled disloyal by patriotic Germans, his platform demands immediate abandonment of the war, a stance shared in common with compatriots of other ancestry, fueling accusations of disloyalty.

Stephen Cassidy 38 year old son of Mr and Mrs John Cassidy of 59 Litchfield Street Brighton was kicked by a horse in a field off Waverley Street. He sustained a fractured skull and is feared dead. he is on the dangerous list at St Elizabeth's Hospital.
