Central Labor Union Endorses City Sanitation Plan Meeting

The Boston Central Labor Union met in Wells Memorial Hall and endorsed the sanitary department proposal opposing contracting refuse collection. Delegates gave generous support for the Marlboro Strikers and elected officers including Frank S. Pickett president and J Frank O Haire vice president. New delegates admitted from Bakers, Theatrical Mechanics, and Printing Pressmen unions.

Record Gambling Raid Arrests Forty-One At Rail Porters Club

A major gambling raid in the South End led to 41 men being arrested at 96 Village Street. Officers found a craps game in progress at the Railroad Porters and Waiters' Association club, with 22 white and 19 colored men detained and bailed later. One fugitive, John Robinson, fell from a second story window, injuring an ankle. The group faces arraignment today.

Fire at Clark Street Attic injures 14 year old girl

A four story building at 36 and 38 Clark street with an entrance at 338 North street caught fire around 9 pm. Katherine Kratty a 14 year old girl was overcome by smoke and removed by firefighters but revived by Dr. Dunn. The blaze started from a defective flue and caused two hours of hard work by firemen. The damaged area was partly business and partly dwelling and owned by Inson. the fault area occupied by Harry Senza. Estimated loss under 200 dollars.

Decorations at King's Capel Stand Out in Historic Chapel

The Unitarian service at King's Capel featured simple yet effective decor with potted plants and evergreen garlands around memorial tablets. Rev. Howard N. Brown led a large morning service and a Sunday school festival followed in the afternoon.

Fifth Massachusetts Regiment Tours New York City

The Fifth Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry spent daylight hours viewing signs from Central Park to the Brooklyn Bridge via the Bowery. The regiment arrived at 9 a.m. on a special train in three sections of twelve cars each.

Funeral of Azel Bowditch Pioneer Horticulturist in Somerville

Funeral services for Azel C. Bowditch, long time Somerville resident and pioneer New England Horticultural Society member, were held at his son's home on Springfield Street. Rev N K Bishop officiated. He ran a flower shop near Tremont House and was active in the Odd Fellows. Interment was at Woodlawn.

Rear Admiral Carpenter Ends His Life by Self Inflicted Shot

Rear Admiral Cartes Carpenter, a Portsmouth native and veteran of the U.S. Navy, died after a self-inflicted gunshot at a Jamaica Plain hospital. His daughter Josephine coordinated the aftermath as officials awaited autopsy results. Carpenter, born in Massachusetts and long tied to Portsmouth, served from 1850 onward, including actions aboard the Portsmouth, Merrimac, Roanoke, and Colorado, and helped capture the slave brig Echo.

Fire alarm from Box 281 reported yesterday afternoon a blaze caused by careless matches in a three story brick building on Wyn Street housing a furniture store. Damage is estimated at 500 dollars.

Handel Haydn Society Sings Paradise and the Peri with Nordica

The Handel and Haydn Society offered its final season concert at Music Hall featuring Mme. Nordica as the Peri in Paradise and the Peri. The performance included Miss Fannie Hirsch Mrs. Adele Baldwin Whitney Mockridge and Hugo Heintz with a large orchestra under Mr. Schnitzler. Nordica's rendering drew heavy applause despite some uneven moments from the quartet and a chorus kept busy but largely resting.

Charles Philippe De Chennevieres 78 or 79, noted member of the institute and director at the Academie Des Beaux Arts, passed away in Paris. He served as chairman of the administration board for the Paris Exposition of 1878.
