Stella Wreck on Casquet Rocks Leaves Many Dead
The Stella of the London and Southwestern Railway was wrecked off the Casquet Rocks near Alderney while on the Jersey excursion run. Estimates place deaths from seventy to one hundred among many passengers and crew, with 140 on board later reports. Captain Reek perished on the bridge as the ship sank after a fogbound collision, while the crew and passengers struggled in lifeboats and wreckage. Survivors were taken to Guernsey by nearby steamers Vera, Honfleur, and Lynx, as authorities assess tolls and missing persons.
