Miners report widespread work stoppages in about 20 states with many non union workers aligning with unionists. Washington officials say coal stocks could meet public needs for weeks while railroads and industries expect disruption. About 600000 quit last night, with 500000 union and 100000 non union according to union figures.
Salisbury March 31 A wild civil suit follows claims by Samuel Walter Stevens of Mudnock that Town Treasurer Samuel W Weare pulled his whiskers. Stevens seeks 10000 balm for public humiliation in a case that also mentions boxing gloves battle axes pistols cannon or spears. The tale includes a July Bonfire and a flock of youngsters and a shower of rocks and Hallowe en cutups.
In Ogdensburg New York on March 31 a crowd at Rouses Point watched customs officers destroy 3800 bottles of seized liquor in Lake Champlain. People jumped into rowboats and waded in to salvage alcohol as officers used force to keep them back while the floaters stirred by the surface. United States Marshal Andrus of Piattstown oversaw the destruction.
George E Phelan was named manager of the George R White estate to receive five percent of the will income, about 12500 dollars annually for five years. Trustees outlined first projects including four Health Units and possible accumulation of income for a municipal auditorium, with action due after a three month notice.
Madeira March 31 AP report says former Emperor Charles of Austria-Hungary, ill with pneumonia, has a deteriorating condition.
President Thomas F. McMahon of the United Textile Workers of America says he will tolerate no connection with radical and irresponsible leaders in the Lawrence strike after a conference with local labor leaders in Lawrence on March 31.
The United Textile Workers of America claim sole responsibility for the strike, disavowing ties to the American Federation of Textile Operators and One Big Union. The leader warns against radical figures and notes over 75,000 mill workers in New England are unemployed due to strikes or factory closures.
Greenleaf W. Simpson aged 77 a retired Boston businessman died at his daughter’s home in Cleveland. He was one of the founders and the first president of the Boston Chamber of Commerce retiring from business ten years ago.

Burglars forced a hole in the rear ground floor wall at 2107 Washington Street Roxbury and stole $8000 worth of silk from the Peerless Dress Company factory top floor. They removed over 100 bolts through a small opening and loaded them into a wagon or car, leaving many other bolts untouched.
New England faced rain or snow with cold winds and four inches of snow turning to slush. Snow plows and shovels worked as streets remained slippery. Residents kept to boots and rubbers while Steam and trolley services ran, but pedestrians faced frequent slips and uncertain travel.

On a Manila to Hong Kong liner a Chinese mother Mrs Wu Ling gave birth to twin boys. Passengers donated 500 dollars for a christening party and the babies were named Sink Ling and Swim Ling.
In crowded New York streets near Pershing Square, 11 detectives engaged four bandits in a close range pistol confrontation to prevent a $6500 payroll theft from Cashier Charles R. Brady and Superintendent William Gottell of Masten Construction Company. The crowd watched from Belmont Hotel windows as officers tackled the attackers in front of the new branch of the firm at 103 Park Avenue.
Leonard A. McPhee of 35 Bow Street Stoneham was arrested by Malden officers on drug possession charges. A middle aged Calem Street woman claimed McPhee held $225 of her money, with $200 recovered from a friend. Police found a small case with powder vials and three pills, later sent to Boston for analysis.
In New York on March 31 three men robbed the Bronx distributing station of Macy & Co. They wounded manager Charles De Lorme and fled without grabbing a bag holding about 9000 dollars in receipts. Investigators probe the raid and search for suspects.
Eight year old Leo Menconi of 5 Paul street was hurled about 20 feet when a fire engine skidded and struck the curb at Broadway near Winchester street. He was placed on the danger list at City Hospital with possible skull fracture and multiple injuries.
An alarm response sent an engine racing along Broadway toward Tremont street. A Manconi boy and Julia Bonagli 16 dragged a laundry cart into the roadway. The engine veered into a slush gutter, striking the boy who flew 20 feet and landed on his head. The front wheel hit a curb on Winchester street, collapsing and tilting the engine as the crew jumped clear.
After talks with Public Works Commissioner Rourke and Fire Chief Taber, Mayor Curley said he will seek a $2,000,000 loan through the Legislature to fund high pressure service in Boston and a third pumping station on Stanhope Street. Alfred Davenport, a member of the Fire Uniters board, told the mayor that insurance rates in districts with high pressure service have fallen and the 15 percent conflagration clause was removed. Once seven miles of water mains and the pumping station are finished, insurance rates in previously unprotected areas should drop immediately.
Governor Cox urges restraint in suspected rabies cases. He cites complaints of unnecessary panic leading to dogs being shot and killed. He calls for muzzling or restraining dogs instead of immediate death when rabies is suspected.
