Senator Shively reports Huerta has agreed to salute the American flag at Tampico provided U S ships return the salute. He notes this is a request to follow the usual form and does not constitute recognition of Huerta as Mexico’s de jure ruler.
Washington April 16 The American navy and army prepare for possible actions in Mexico after the Tampico incident with fleets bound to block ports at Tampico and Vera Cruz. Secretary Garrison says land forces stand ready on the mark to cross the Rio Grande or land from either coast amid Huerta’s defiance and Wilson’s inflexible policy.
Washington April 26 Count von Bernstorf German ambassador Joan Ling Wilsons envoy to Mexico and Secretary of State Bryan held a long conference at the state department on the Mexican situation. Afterward Bryan met with President Wilson at the White House in a hurried session. The ambassador said Germany endorses watchful waiting and will leave the matter to the United States while protecting both German and American citizens.
Brig. Gen Mills ordered adjutant generals of all state militia to send detailed information on the strength and equipment of their forces. The War Department wants this data to arrange a potential emergency augmentation of the regular army, with Secretary Garrison calling for readiness.
Washington dispatch reports hundreds of volunteers in the district of Columbia ready to proceed to a Mexican campaign. Lieutenant Colonel Parmenter said the district guard could mobilize one artillery battery, one signal corps unit, one hospital corps and 1,500 infantrymen within hours. The naval militia signaled eagerness to embark for the south.
Members of Company L I N Gy may receive a typhoid vaccination in coming days to immunize against the disease. The move aligns with a nationwide army effort to reduce typhoid deaths. About thirty Crawfordsville company members were vaccinated last night, with Capt B C Rogers considering the treatment for his unit. A county agricultural agent conducted a pruning and spraying demonstration in Marion township at L Q Thompson's orchard.
The Christian Life Campaign began last night with Dr Wasser delivering a simple, convincing message about why such campaigns are needed. He stressed realizing the consciousness of God and the life that follows, urging obedience to the voice of conscience as guidance for a true Christian life. Services run nightly at 7:30 with the choir aiding the program and the speaker avoiding a strict sinner versus saint dichotomy.
In Indianapolis this afternoon judge instructed the jury in the case of Charles E. Young of Jamestown charged with embezzling funds from the National Oil Refining Co. The court directed a verdict for the defendant, and the jury returned a not guilty verdict.
Mr and Mrs M F Campbell report the death of their niece Mrs Ed Newell in Chattanooga Tennessee on Wednesday at 625 PM The Campbells had visited her in her home and accompanied her to the station En route to Lebanon They will attend the funeral in Chattanooga with other relatives including Mrs Shanefelter and Mrs Coombs whose family ties connect to the Campbells The couple left for Chattanooga to funeral rites this afternoon
The Lebanton and Boone county Progressives plan a large delegation to the state convention in Indianapolis. A special interurban car will transport about a hundred delegates, with a 5 30 p m departure and a parade and speakers planned in Indianapolis. Albert J Beveridge will chair and address the gathering.

The Chattanooga Times announces the engagement and coming marriage of Miss Maude Rathmell to Dr. Julius Culpepper Brooks. The wedding is set for May 14 at the bride’s parents’ home in Chattanooga. Rathmell, linked to prominent Chattanooga and Lebanon families, has connections to Washington College and local social circles. Clinton Township Progressives plan a convention on April 26 at school house No. 8 to nominate a township ticket.
A Wednesday night silver medal contest under the W C T U was well attended at Walnut Street Baptist Church. Fred Adams won with The Bartender's Dream while Mary Sanford Mary Chaver Edmund Ryan and William Hill also spoke. Leone Edwards, a prior medalist, read Who Killed Joe's Baby. Church choir provided musical numbers and Mrs Frank Essex was praised for guiding the participants.
Wilder's Brigade reunion set for October 8 in Anderson with about 250 Civil War veterans attending from Boone County. Gen. Wilder, age 82 and living in Tennessee, will be the guest of honor. The event honors Farmington Tennessee's battle victory and lists brigade units including the 17th Indiana and 98th Illinois infantry.
Frank Meyers, wanted for breaking parole from Michigan City penitentiary, was nabbed by Lafayette police after fleeing Bloomington. He had been sentenced March 7, 1908, with John Riley for stealing a butter basket near the interurban station on February 20, 1908, and was on parole for several months. Meyers will be sent back to Michigan City to finish his term.
The Baptist Woman's Missionary Society held its monthly gathering at the First Baptist church with strong attendance. Mrs Roy Metzger sang two solos and Miss Mary Coons played accompaniment. Mrs Lan Horner led devotionals as Mrs T H Martin delivered a thorough lesson on A Centenary of Baptist Missionary Organization aided by several members. A social hour followed in the basement with refreshments served by hostesses.
