A group including Elbert and Opal Pankratz and Mr and Mrs Robert Hall stake out space at a Jaycee party in Atlanta on Wednesday night. The four, from Oklahoma City, attend the national Jaycee convention as mint juleps circulate.
A Bonham Chronicle reader reports widespread failure of motorists in Bonham and Fannin County to pull over for fire trucks police cars and ambulances with sirens. The writer cites a sheriff run to Dodd City showing most drivers hug the center line and only a California plate pulled over. Officials stress sirens mean vehicles must yield at once to allow emergency crews to pass safely.
Abilene born Alton Lee nicknamed General takes over as Baylor University registrar in Waco Texas from Lt Col. Truett K. Grant who resigned to pursue an Army career. Lee succeeds Grant after the June 24 report.
A Senate subcommittee in New York plans hearings Friday and Saturday to question law enforcement officials narcotics addicts and drug pushers as it probes better laws to curb illicit traffic. Sen Price Daniel said New York leads the nation in narcotics addiction with about 9000 known addicts and estimates of twice that number unknown. The witnesses include two unidentified addicts and two Cubans arrested with cocaine valued at 25 dollars.
Two Fannin County schools begin a six to eight week summer term on June 27 to aid cotton harvest. Teachers include Miss Trent Hamm, Mrs. Tommy Fair, and Eddie Van Traylor chosen to teach science and coach. Classes run 7 40 a m to 2 30 p m with lunch at 20 cents. Other county schools to start by mid summer.
Amon Carter, longtime Fort Worth Star Telegram publisher and philanthropist, died at his Fort Worth home after a career that raised the city’s profile. The newspaper noted his health had been failing since 1993. his public appearances included introducing Gov. Richards Shivers at the Southwestern Exposition. Carter hosted notable figures at Shady Oak Farm and dreamed of regional projects despite years of illness. His death ends a significant era in Texas journalism and Fort Worth civic life.
The Bonham Civil Air Patrol unit will send cadets and senior members to the Texas Wing SARCAP at Pounds Field Tyler from July 6 to 10. Attendees include Lt Fred Lecrog Wins Lt Tommy Wallin Lt Max Untersee Lt Walter White and others plus cadets Capt Howard Case Lt Joe Keene Lt Butch Kennedy and more. The exercise is directed by Col Marcus Barnes with Maj K Liebe and includes practice sessions June 26 July 3 to prep for the mission. Capt Dan Sitaler leads the Bonham squadron. some members travel Friday by car or plane and others Saturday morning.

Katricia Pope daughter of Mr and Mrs George Gordon Pope of Bonham placed second in the state beauty contest held at Lake Whitney on Thursday Miss Pope had previously won the title of Miss Tesoma on June 12 in the pageant culminating at Lake Whitney.
Navy Secretary Charles Thomas told the Dallas audience that the Navy is at the forefront of atomic energy work including reactor research for carriers and an atom powered plant for aircraft. He praised the atomic submarine Nautilus and warned conventional warfare will still matter with sea lines and allied bases needing protection.

Amond Carter 76 publisher of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram died at his Fort Worth home Thursday night after a long heart illness. He had suffered heart attacks two years earlier and had been in declining health since then.
