Bonham stores stayed open until 9 p.m. on Thursday to give shoppers extra time for purchases. A large afternoon crowd lingered as stores remained busy until the 9 o'clock closing. With Saturday the last shopping day merchants expect a last minute rush and note Christmas business is up overall though heavy winter clothing sales lag due to warm weather.

Paris dispatch reports the St. Louis bridge over the River Seine collapsed today, throwing pedestrians and vehicles into the river. Three people were known dead and additional casualties feared as rescue efforts launched.

AAA Office Saturday Hours For Soil Conservation Checks

The AAA office will stay open all day Saturday with two men in the office to distribute soil conservation checks to farmers. Dan Barnard ACA secretary said a farmer left a word he would be informed when his check arrived. The farmer’s check arrived Thursday and he was notified by phone.

McCleary Named President of Fair Association

C. H. McCleary of Honey Grove was elected president as the fair association chose new officers. The report also notes China’s strategic moves in the war, with Gen. Pai Chung-hsi surrounding Nanning and Chiangkai-shek establishing a Kunming headquarters to reinforce southwest defenses against Japan.

Fannin County Fair Association names new officers

Officers of the Fannin County Fair Association were elected at a called meeting. C H McCleary of Honey Grove was named president, with HOOH Blackburn Leonard and George W Taylor Ladonia as vice presidents, Tom Rayburn Bonham secretary, Tom Hyner Randolph assistant secretary, and Frank Wright Bonham treasurer. Executive board and committee members from Bonham, Honey Grove, Ladonia, and surrounding towns were chosen for the ensuing year. A follow up meeting is planned to organize plans for a WPA project to build a new fair plant on land owned by the association north of Bonham, with work likely to start after the new year.

Fannin County Schools Close for Christmas Holiday

Fannin county rural and Independent schools dismissed Friday afternoon for the Christmas recess. Most schools resume Monday, Jan. 1. Rural schools held Christmas trees and programs Thursday night or Friday, with teachers and pupils enjoying a nine day break to travel within Texas.

Washington reports the 1939 fall pig crop of 211,985,000 head, the largest in 117 years of records. The Agriculture Department released the figures, noting the gain over prior crops and the trend in hog production.

Weatherford will house all Parker County banking after next week as Farmers Bank Peaster closes its doors. Earlier, Springtown Poolville Whitt Millsap and Aledo banks closed or merged, leaving Weatherford as the sole town with banking services in the county. Railway Crash Kills 77 Near German Station

A Berlin train collision at Genthin near Brandenburg today killed 77 and wounded about 100.
