President Roosevelt said he is too busy to consider the 1940 presidential nomination and did not comment on Vice President Garner's candidacy. He stressed timing and proportion, noting other issues such as foreign affairs are more pressing.
Washington dispatch reports under secretary John W Hanes resigned to return to private business. Hanes leaves his Treasury post after serving in the administration, stating it was his decision to pursue opportunities in the private sector.
Bonham stores stayed open until 9 p.m. on Thursday to give shoppers extra time for purchases. A large afternoon crowd lingered as stores remained busy until the 9 o'clock closing. With Saturday the last shopping day merchants expect a last minute rush and note Christmas business is up overall though heavy winter clothing sales lag due to warm weather.
Paris dispatch reports the St. Louis bridge over the River Seine collapsed today, throwing pedestrians and vehicles into the river. Three people were known dead and additional casualties feared as rescue efforts launched.
Propaganda Minister Paul Joseph Goebbels declared in Berlin that Germany is staking all on the current conflict. He said the war is not a mere potato dispute but will bring a swift decision about Germany’s future. He stated the nation will either relinquish its status as a great power or secure victory.

Officers of the Fannin County Fair Association were elected at a called meeting. C H McCleary of Honey Grove was named president, with HOOH Blackburn Leonard and George W Taylor Ladonia as vice presidents, Tom Rayburn Bonham secretary, Tom Hyner Randolph assistant secretary, and Frank Wright Bonham treasurer. Executive board and committee members from Bonham, Honey Grove, Ladonia, and surrounding towns were chosen for the ensuing year. A follow up meeting is planned to organize plans for a WPA project to build a new fair plant on land owned by the association north of Bonham, with work likely to start after the new year.
Fannin county rural and Independent schools dismissed Friday afternoon for the Christmas recess. Most schools resume Monday, Jan. 1. Rural schools held Christmas trees and programs Thursday night or Friday, with teachers and pupils enjoying a nine day break to travel within Texas.
Washington reports the 1939 fall pig crop of 211,985,000 head, the largest in 117 years of records. The Agriculture Department released the figures, noting the gain over prior crops and the trend in hog production.

Doorn Holland December 33 Beores of poor persons gathered in the Castle Doorn park to receive Christmas gifts from the exiled former Kaiser Wilhelm Wilhelm. He remained indoors per doctor orders, watching from a castle window with his wife Princess Hermine. A Doorn church delegation prodded the ceremony as the Kaiser, 80, waved to the cheering crowd clutching their Christmas presents.
A Berlin train collision at Genthin near Brandenburg today killed 77 and wounded about 100. The passenger Berline Neonkieehen train struck a Berlin Cologne service, slowing to a near standstill at Genthin station. The incident marks Germanys seventh major rail wreck since the war began. A note claims a new cholera-like spread, but details are unclear.
Helsinki dispatches report Soviet air bombardment of the capital as Finnish sources claim the Red Army offensive was smashed. About 15 bombs hit the factory district injuring two, several failed to explode, planes dropped propaganda and left the Gulf of Finland under a brief snow flurry.
In San Antonio on December 22, WPA Texas workers will receive December pay early after reorganizing schedules in the WPA Division of Finance with U S Treasury and state offices. About 90,000 Texas WPA workers will have over four million dollars paid before Christmas to boost holiday spending, with staggered pay dates and project rescheduling to accumulate hours.
A Paris dispatch cites Le Temps quoting a reliable source that the German fleet left Hamburg with about half heading into the Baltic Sea and the other half toward the North Sea The Baltic bound portion was said to pass through the Kiel Canal and proceed toward its destination.
