Harry R. Cooper and Miss Bessie Powers of Grant county wed amid a carnival in Marion in a lions den, earning a $50 prize. After a search for a willing couple and a willing minister, the ceremony proceeded despite fears and practical hurdles.
Deputy Prosecutor Matlack sent letters to about forty individuals arrested in the past year who have not paid fines. He warns that after Saturday warrants will be issued and the marshal must pursue delinquents or jail them. The notices accuse the marshal of neglect and threaten consequences to enforce law.
Lewis A Minnear and nearby residents have gathered enough signatures to establish a free gravel road from Buckner road three miles to Mounsey road. The project would service two rural routes and is deemed necessary. Since it lies on the county line, the petition will be filed with the oldest county Huntington, as its records show Huntington is older than Wells.
A barn owned by Harmon Frees blocked the inter urban line at noon, as it was moved from an alley to Central avenue. The 11 o'clock car halted to discharge passengers, but by noon the barn had cleared the track and service resumed.
A Hereford cattle sale held today in Wabash offered sixty head owned by David Studabaker. The thoroughbreds attracted attendees from throughout the state though none were prize winners. The event was expected to yield a strong total.
About forty friends gathered at the home of Rev and Mrs J C F Scherich in Poneto last night for a surprise in honor of the Poneto Baptist church pastor. The gathering was held at their home and ended with substantial evidences of esteem and friendship evident among the guests.
A gym tale describes a recent girls basketball game at the high school. Two young teams take turns after school, with timid players learning to stay put and ball handling improving. Some older players from the W. E. B. O. club subbed late, and signs of crack players emerge as experience grows.
The Lake Erie and Western railroad seeks arrangements with the Big Four to run through trains between Fort Wayne and Indianapolis in the morning and at night. If approved it will boost business and reassure travelers who currently face uncertainty returning home on the steam line.
Seven new members were taken in the W R C with a splendid session. After initiatory work a social hour followed with ice cream and cake. The lodge reports steady growth and enthusiasm for the order in the city. Hon Levi Mook and Judge Dalley traveled to Decatur this morning on business connected with Studabaker Eto.
Edgar D Cochran of Keystone returned after two years in the Philippines arriving in town last night He sailed from Manila April 15 and landed in San Francisco May 16 via Honolulu and Santa Fe He notes English gaining among children and Chinese in mercantile work while natives adopt American customs He claims to be through with army service and says his discharge shows excellent character and faithful service
Jere McBride of this city learned this morning that his brother John McBride a Keystone resident died last night after years of invalidism. He was the last living brother of Jere McBride. Funeral arrangements unavailable. He leaves a wife and five children.
W H Eichhorn filed a motion for a new trial in the Faylor Studabaker case in Decatur arguing the court erred in his instructions. If denied, the outcome will move to higher courts. The case has spanned Wells and Adams counties with extensive litigation and informed locals.
George Matlack left for a few days on the farm after a letter from his father David Matlack. The Matlack crop is in corn planting, and a new patent check tower is in use. George is said to sit on the rear end to keep the tongue from resting too hard on the horses’ necks, his weight framed as essential to the mechanism.
The first game on the new tennis courts was played yesterday evening. Grounds are in fine shape, surrounded by ten foot poultry netting, and players showed fast work. Games will be held every evening.
The post office will open from 8 to 9 a m on Monday May 30 Decoration day and closed for the rest of the day. City carriers will deliver at windows and the clerk at general delivery will also be available. Mails will be collected and despatched as usual. A L Sharper Postmaster.
Mrs Bert Wolfe of Irving on West Huntington street was surprised by about twenty five ladies from Bluffton. They traveled by 2:35 car and gathered at the home of Mrs Wolff to honor her birthday anniversary at Montpelier Hall.
One hundred twelve members of the Queen Esther band and Epworth League traveled to Bluffton Monday night for a 7:00 excursion delayed by a horse on the track. The party was greeted by a committee, hosted at the church, and wowed by the Linden quartet from Hartford City. Refreshments followed and Hartford City patrons praised Bluffton hospitality, with hopes of future exchanges.
A scammer claims that an 184 dollar coin grants a World’s Fair season ticket and that scarce dates are found. A confederate then sells such coins at up to five dollars each. The coin is of no special value for admission, the malevolent duo touring cities to push the fraud.
A Rochester fisherman devised a quirky bass fishing scheme on Lake Manitau. He released six geese tied to minnows, watching them drag black bass to Brady Sibert’s barn yard where a leghorn rooster spurred the fish to death.
A doctor jokes about a prescription cost, citing sixty cents to fill, then erases sections of the order and offers a dime. He quips those scratched out were for the patient’s nerves, suggesting none are needed. The exchange ends with a humorous twist on medical pricing.
The Pentecost mission has set up a tent in the city’s west side and began nightly services last night with strong attendance. The group plans to continue meetings as long as interest remains high. The Brand lodge IO FY decides to continue its schools of instruction for subordinate lodges across the state until the November meeting. The new feature aids members in understanding degree work and unwritten traditions. Twenty schools will be held over six months under Grand Instructor W. Hott with Mr Tal exemplifying the secret work before about 2,500 Odd Fellows at the grand meeting.
