A seedy visitor in Amesville Ohio near the Sage of Athens became mayor by joke vote. Governor Nash notes the election was a stunt but Weed later grew into an capable official, while residents face the consequences of their own laughter.
Captain Krunn reports an official order from the Indiana Militia headquarters for this year’s state encampment. It runs nine days from July 26 to August 3 at the usual Indianapolis site, with General Maker of the Indiana brigade in charge. Bluffton company likely to have its equipment ready by then.
A letter from Mrs. H. R. Medaugh of Wren Ohio hails Wegene as a blessing for catarrh of the stomach and nervousness. She says two doctors declared her incurable, but Wegene improved her stomach and nerves, leaving her grateful and renewed. The note touts Wegene as a vegetable medicine with blood-building tonics and California port wine claiming to aid stomach, blood and nerves.
D A Walmer of Walmer and Engeler announced the settlement on stock damaged by fire. Five insurers Milwaukee 5000 Royal 2500 Germania of Peoria 2500 Western Underwriters 2500 Freemans of Baltimore 2500 total 15000 with a ten percent off basis yielding 13500. Building insurance was 6000. One company also insured the Hik s club rooms carrying 1200 and the club will receive 94.88.

The Muncie Hartford and Fort Wayne electric line advances rapidly with graders two miles beyond Poneto. Slaves Construction Co handles the contract as a bridge across the river near Montpelier nears completion. Expect cars to run into town before fall with summer plans to extend toward Fort Wayne and boost passenger traffic.
A local notice extols Bucklen's Arnica Salve as effective for burns cuts sores eczema and piles. It claims frequent accidents and suggests carrying the salve for quick soothing relief available at Deam's drug store for 25 cents.
Roy DeHaven reports Warren in a major battle over saloons with anti saloon forces shutting all outlets except one basement tavern under a hotel. The license runs to October but authorities may close it within weeks as basement operation is illegal.
Oil men celebrate a new well on the Widow Maddox farm between Montpellier and Hartford City. The J. B. Mayor oil company drilled it, and the prospect pumps a barrel per minute. Leasing surges as prices climb, reviving early industry fever.
Mrs Nellie D Springer wife of Ernest Springer died at her home north of Ossian on June 11 1903 aged about twenty eight and seven months. She leaves a husband a son Alva two brothers and a sister. Funeral at the German Lutheran church northeast of Ossian on Sunday at 9 30 with interment at Oak Lawn cemetery. Rev Greiger officiating. The notice also includes an unrelated 1886 oath about Hall’s Catarrh Cure by F J Cheney & Co.
About seventy neighbors gathered at three miles northwest of Linn Grove to surprise Mrs. J. P. Steiner on her thirty ninth birthday. The party, planned by her husband, featured a bountiful supper and old fashioned sociable afterward. Attendees included Grandmas Steiner and Huffman among many others. well wishes followed. A passage promotes Electric Bitters as a health tonic.
Seventy five women gathered at the Methodist church last Friday to back a blanket remonstrance. They signed a paper agreeing to use all lawful means to suppress saloons and will help secure signatures.
The wedding at a decorated Methodist church featured Miss Grace Horton and Frederick Doria Tracy of Toledo. Rev Beeks officiated as vows were exchanged with Mendelssohn music. A reception and luncheon followed at the bride’s home, and gifts included cut glass, silver chests, Persian rugs, and a substantial check from Dr and Mrs Troxton.
The Board of Commissioners of Wells County Indiana will hear a petition and report on the merit of a proposed ditch. The project runs from 1144 feet south of the NW corner of section 19 through a measured route to the Wa bash river, affecting lands of Wm Stershner, Jacob Harvey, Elizabeth Harvey, Branson Weaver, Catharina Weaver, Severna Myers, and Lancaster Township. Auditor W A Marsh signs the notice.
Wells county Indiana invites bids from contractors for a 470 foot span Tron Bridge over Rock Creek Ditch at Librarty towned near George Frantz residence and for a stone arch on the Studabaker gravel road near A T Studabaker. Plans and specs are on file in the county auditor's office. Bids due 1 p m Wednesday June 2 1903. By order of the Board of County Commissioners.
