Spanish War Pensioners Seek Broad Pensions Raid
Hr Ware, pension commissioner, reports over twenty percent of Spanish War volunteers have applied for pensions. Of 231,901 men mustered, 36,692 were casualties. By May first, 47,546 invalids and 3,390 widow and dependents sought pensions, with 9,881 invalid and 3,160 widow pensions granted, 18,185 rejected, 34,210 pending. Ware says daily applications rise and expects half of recalled names to seek pensions by year end.

Death of an Old Blufftonian J C Kain
J C Kain, once a Bluffton dry goods merchant and later a Denver and Rocky Ford resident, died quietly at his Rocky Ford home after several months of illness. He was born June 26 1826 in Pennsylvania, served in the Civil War, escaped Libby prison, and was a longtime Presbyter ian church member and elder. His funeral was held at the Presbyterian church in Rocky Ford with interment in Rocky Ford cemetery.
