Mingo Ambulance Service Faces Saturday Shutdown
About 50,000 Mingo County residents could lose ambulance service at midnight Saturday as four Williamson area funeral homes end operations. They say funding delays from Charleston and federal requirements make continued service economically unfeasible. The plan, backed by the Southern West Virginia Regional Health Council, would create a 24 hour nine-vehicle system serving 100,000 residents across four counties in WV and KY.

ILS Becomes Agreement Over Airport Security Duties
Former Sheriff Winifrey Shrewsbury and chief deputy E R Shorty Simons reach an agreement with the airport authority to provide security as part of regular duties. Sheriff Scott and Roy Compton accuse Burton of inflated pay demands and moonlighting concerns. The deal envisions seven deputies paid 100 dollars monthly while a private firm would receive 900 dollars monthly with arrest powers. Piedmont Airlines raises passenger fee by 59 cents May 12 to cover security costs, including 25 cents for guards and 34 cents for airport security measures. The authority may hire two guards by August.
