The Commerce Department reports GNP rose 2.9 percent annual rate in Q1, down from prior estimates. A widened foreign trade deficit trimmed almost $8 billion from growth, with Volcker warning of slow economy but not a recession. Analysts doubt Q2 will exceed 1 percent.
The revised first quarter data shows real GNP at 3.62 trillion dollars with an annualized growth rate of 1.9 percent. The report updates the nation’s measure of total goods and services produced, reflecting adjustments in price and output estimates.
The Senate rejected an amendment to aid middle income taxpayers, clearing the way for final passage of a broad tax overhaul. A 71 to 29 vote blocked George Mitchell’s plan for a 35 percent top rate for the richest 5 percent, as debate shifts toward a House-Senate conference. FDA Commissioner Frank E Young urged immediate stop to Extra-Strength Excedrin capsules after cyanide was detected in a bottle linked to a Seattle area death. Bristol-Myers withdrew all Excedrin capsules nationwide and asked consumers to stop using them. Two Bluefield pharmacists said they were removing the product from shelves and advised caution until the issue is resolved.
U S District Judge John T. Copenhaver Jr postponed a decision on a writ of prohibition filed by Mercer County Sheriff Donald R. Hare to bar county judges and magistrates from sending people to the jail over crowding. Attorney Robert King argued federal courts lack jurisdiction. Hare’s attorneys contended jurisdiction exists in state matters involving federal involvement. The petition names Sheriff Hare and had listed county commissioners initially but they later dropped out.

The House approved on a voice vote a substitute amend ment for the Anti-Apartheid Act of 1986 calling for withdrawal of U S business investment in South Africa and an all out trade embargo. Lawmakers backed sanctions more to thwart them than enact them amid rising opposition to apartheid.
Mercer County Circuit Judge William O. Bivens heard motions to dismiss three defendants in related civil actions totaling 40 million dollars stemming from the 1984 Mercer County Airport crash that killed four Dean Company employees and injured two. The defendants include Stone Aviation, the West Virginia Aeronautics Commission, and Piedmont Aviation. Lawyers were told to file memoranda by June 30, while the four suits were filed by the spouses and estates of several victims.
