Ex-White House counsel grilled on conflict issue
Washington AP Former White House counsel Fred Fielding faced sharp questioning by a House panel over ethics during the Reagan era in a probe of lobbyist Michael K Deaver. Lawmakers said Fielding’s memo favoring Deaver a day after a Deaver firm meeting showed poor judgment and possible improper influence. They noted Deaver remains the central target of the conflict of interest inquiry while Fielding denies any job offer was extended. Deaver, longtime Reagan confidant, left government in 1985 to form his lobbying firm. The panel and independent counsel pursue whether Deaver violated conflict laws by lobbying former colleagues on cases he handled in government. Deaver’s lawyers have resisted a return appearance.
