Baby Receives Infant Heart From Brain-Dead Donor
In California a 16 day old baby named Jesse Sepulveda underwent a heart transplant after his unwed parents relinquished custody to grandparents. Dr Leonard Bailey at Loma Linda University Medical Center led the procedure begun about 6 p m and projected to last six hours using a heart from a brain-dead donor announced on the Phil Donahue show. The donor arrived from Grand Rapids Michigan and was tested as Jesse received cyclosporine to prevent rejection. Bailey praised the donor family and noted the transplant process includes preparation, surgery, and stabilization.
